Heavy period - what type of clots are normal?

Currently on day 3 of a nasty period. Changing tampons every hour or so as I keep flooding into the pads I’m also having to wear. Also seeing lots of clots. Some are quite big… one was about 8cm long. When I look online about clots, it talks about them being more than 2.5cm wide. Are these sites referring to ball shaped clots or actual length? Like I said, one of mine today was about 8cm long. Just wondering if I should contact my GP. My periods seem to be getting worse lately.

How old are you?

If you're in your forties I think it's quite common.

See a doctor if it's impacting your life.

I've always had bad periods so don't bat an eyelid at one or two ping pong ball size clots now I'm 43.

Luckily mine are "only' really heavy for 48 hours or so. If it goes on for many days you may need to be tested for anemia

I already suffer with low iron levels so this isn’t helping. I am feeling extremely fatigued.

I suffered from massive clots every 30 mins or so for a week if not longer for years. Made it nearly impossible to leave the house

the only way I got taken seriously by my Dr was to take pictures and show him. Bit grim but until then he just told me clotting was normal

take some pics and timings and get an appointment with your GP

Definitely speak to GP especially as you already have low iron levels. I had a few flooding periods that worried me because the clots were enormous and I could feel them coming. Luckily I was near the bathroom each time. I was mostly worried about it happening outside and flooding through clothing and it being such a change.

Had blood test and needed prescription of iron and had never had an issue with iron levels previously. Sent for scan and nothing serious found but better to be safe than sorry. I only had a few periods like this then no more since. I was late 30's and the same thing happened to a friend of the same age.

Def see your GP
Are you up to date with smears ? If not this is a priority .
You are too young to be managing this and need a medical review
Take care

Definitely worth investigations. I was your age when I was diagnosed with fibroids after periods that had gradually got longer and heavier.

The flooding and clots can be quite something.

I had this at a similar age to you, a large fibroid was the cause and it was removed. Check in with the GP and demand a scan. Tell them the gory details, size of clot, frequency of flooding etc. it's not something you should be putting up with month after month.
