Under active thyroid

What made you get tested for under active thyroid? I am displaying quite a few symptoms so I'm going to phone GP to get tested. My symptoms are..

•weight gain
• constipation
• joint pain/ discomfort
• muscle ache
• low libido
• dry hair

Will be relieved if something makes sense as to why I'm piling on weight

I was being tested annually anyway because of high blood pressure and anxiety.

My thyroid symptoms that I especially noticed were brain fog and thin hair. Your symptoms fit. I'd ask for a blood test.

Btw I noticed other symptoms before getting to the correct thyroid replacement dosage. Fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation

tobee · 11/07/2022 22:58

Sorry also retroactively brittle nails and thin:patchy eyebrows

tobee · 11/07/2022 22:58

Retrospectively not retroactively

Some of these fit. Thyroid issues famously have a very wide range of symptoms which is what often makes things difficult to spot without a test. These also could be peri menopause I think? But if you're too young for that, it's worth checking thyroid

Loosing the arch of my eyebrow, dry skin and cold feet even in hot weather.

Def worth testing. In my case it was feeling a bit “off” in a really non-specific way. I think it was discovered when I was TTC (without much success). About 10 years ago.

TooManyPJs · 11/07/2022 23:09

Also had dry skin and horrendous fatigue, plus very poor temperature regulation.

Bear in mind that it took 8 months from first going to my GP with symptoms that I'd had for a while by that point for my test results to be where they needed to be for me to get a diagnosis and started (the titration process takes ages) on medication. All the while feeling more and more unwell.

Oh I forgot the horrendous brain fog.

eleanoreleanoreleanor · 11/07/2022 23:34

Family history initially (mum and aunt) and then developing other symptoms. However mine comes back low but not low enough to need thyroxine...

I have... gained weight
Brain fog
Tired all the time
Anxiety
Bruise easily

I am lucky and relieved in that my gp has always been willing to carry out blood tests for this and other investigations without questioning my judgment.

Consider also asking them to test your calcium levels in relation to your parathyroid glands. Hyperparathyroidism has similar symptoms.

purplepaintedpineapple · 12/07/2022 01:01

Aching muscles - could only walk for 10 minutes and Doctor suggested that's what it was. Haven't had too many other symptoms apart from occasional weariness which I still get even though the thyroxine had worked

Cameleongirl · 12/07/2022 01:09

Tiredness was the main symptom for me, plus cold hands and feet. No weight gain or other symptoms really. I mentioned it to my GP and said perhaps it was because I had very young children so was just constantly tired!

Luckily, she suggested testing and it turned out my thyroid was practically moribund, barely functioning at all. Levothyroxine made a huge difference to my energy levels within a couple of weeks so it's definitely worth asking to be tested.

Thank you all for replying. I'm definitely going to ask to get a test. I'm 39 so I suppose it coukd be peri menopause I'll mention that. Under active thyroid runs in my family so I'm not sure if that makes it more likely too
