Was this an early miscarriage?

Usual prerequisite, I appreciate that I can't get a diagnosis from internet strangers but I'd be interested to hear if anyone has had a similar experience.

Weekend before last, my period was due. It started very lightly on the Saturday, continued lighter than normal on Sunday. Monday I bled normally but felt quite ill with it, felt a bit faint and had stomach cramps, both of which aren't normal for me. Monday and Tuesday I bleed very lightly and it feels like it's coming to an end. I just chalk it up to a particularly painful period. Wednesday, I start bleeding bright red blood, heavily. I'm never this heavy. By 3pm, I'm changing the pad every hour, again abnormal.

I spoke to NHS direct who advised a&e. While waiting to see a doctor in a&e for 6 hours I have to change my pad every ten mins. For hours. There were lots of large clots coming out (size of a 50p or slightly bigger). I've never experienced anything like it before. By the time I saw a doctor the bleeding has stopped. Not petered out like a period, but just abruptly stopped. The doctor said my pregnancy test was negative so it can't be a miscarriage and was "probably period related". No follow up, no examination or explanation.

Has anyone had anything similar?

I would definitely say period related and not miscarriage. I was getting positive tests up to 4 weeks after miscarriage, so it would definitely show up on a test at your stage. Also, it sounds like a lot of clots (unless you are usually heavy). I’ve had miscarriages at a later stage and they were not like that at all - at the stage you would be at it would be like a normal period. I would make an appointment with the GP to investigate further. Good luck!
