Waiting time after uterus polyp biopsy

Michelangelo1975 · 26/06/2022 18:45

Hi,

Wife had 2 polyps taken out & biopsies 2 weeks ago last Friday. We has a holiday booked in UK that started yesterday.

We'd heard nothing & travelled at her wish. But now I'm stressing. She's saying that she's heard that if it's anything nasty you'd generally get a call pretty sharp, so no news after 2 weeks is good. Also that they'd call if wanted you back in.

So we're not at home anyway. What's feeling on here? Is no news after 2 weeks good news?

She's 50 & just started menopause. Had a mirena fitted & she says feeling better already - had one period start that she says is way milder than heavy bleeds she was getting.

I waited two weeks and then phoned my GP who had just received the results.

I have just had a uterus biopsy this morning - they said that I would get a letter in 4-6 weeks - I was shocked it would take so long.

However my appointment was changed back and forth 3 times over the past week (involved losing flights and rebooking new flights accommodations and car hire / airport parking etc for the entire family) - I suspect that staffing is an issue for the procedure as well as biopsy testing.

I am also thinking that the 4-6 week timeframe is a letter to arrive in the post via the GP surgery - so giving plenty of slack in the system (in current holiday time and staff shortage) and this would be for good news.

I suspect that the results are done much quicker than that (as Cancer Research womb cancer page says 2 weeks - up dated last week) and anything irregular will involve a phone call from the GP to come in for a chat to discuss results.

I am just speculating here as I have zero insights ….. hope your wife is OK and you can enjoy your holiday.

A nice stat that I read yesterday is that 90% of tests for cancer are negative (not sure if that was specifically for womb cancer)

Also there may be regional differences with testing capacity and staff shortages.

That’s good to know - I think I will do the same

Uterine polyps are 1.4% chance of cancer so fingers crossed all ok. She's had no phone calls yet or anything so taking that as not bad news.

She is, however, refusing to call the GP whilst we're on holiday.

I had a uterine polypectomy 15ish years ago and I had results within a week, but privately.
They are unlikely to be cancerous - I have another one spotted in ultrasound and am awaiting nhs appt. GP said they often just monitor them these days.

Michelangelo1975 · 06/07/2022 16:37

Well back today from hols & no NHS letter. Will be 4 weeks on Friday so hoping a case now of nothing found & letter making it's way via GP. Surely if any concern they'd have been in touch by now.

I got a letter last week, dated 28 June, which was after the polyp was removed on 09 May. I had assumed that if they found anything urgent I'd have been contacted sooner.

Michelangelo1975 · 06/07/2022 17:52

What was result? OK I hope.

I believe all labs are currently running way behind. Staff shortages and overload. I am waiting for a biopsy results following surgery under the cancer pathway and was due the results today (3 weeks later) but have had a call stating no results in yet so have to wait another week until the MDT can review. It’s very frustrating but unfortunately common at the moment.

EBearhug · 06/07/2022 20:28

Everything (polyp and womb biopsy) clear on mine.

Michelangelo1975 · 06/07/2022 20:55

Brilliant 👍

I've had this done recently

I was told they would call me after 2 weeks'. I haven't given it any thought

I think it is very common

This sounds like the same timeframe I have been given - was on the 2 week urgent cancer pathway for the procedure then told at the biopsy appointment it would be 4-6 weeks - which I found surprising. Good luck to those still waiting.

Michelangelo1975 · 06/07/2022 22:03

My wife was told 2-3 weeks on day of surgery & now been 3.5.

Again, good luck all. Not nice.

I have one inside my vagina I’ve never really thought anything of it , are we supposed to get them seen to ?

EBearhug · 06/07/2022 22:34

Mine was seen at a smear, referred to GP, who referred me to gynae. I just did what I was told.

Michelangelo1975 · 08/07/2022 14:06

4 weeks to day from op & results back OK.

To earlier poster, I would advise getting it checked if you have one. Really silly to find something not right anywhere & not get it checked.
A case of "probably OK" but daft not to make that "definitely OK".

That’s great news - I am really relieved for you all. I called my GP reception this morning (just over a week from procedure) - not back and I wasn’t surprised. So I expect I just need to be patient for another 3-5 weeks.
