Hysteroscopy pain?

Hi Everyone!

I’ve been on the waiting list for a hysteroscopy since October which they were going to do under GA. I’ve just had a call from the hospital as they’re doing an overflow clinic today and have had a cancellation so if I could get there for 2:30 they could do the procedure today but it would be without anaesthesia.

I’m going to go since it’s I’ve been waiting for so long but just how much pain should I expect?

Any info would be much appreciated 😀

Is that wise to have no anaesthesia? I wouldn't entertain the idea myself.

I had mine down with no anthestic and whilst it wasn’t pain free it was tolerable. I took paracetamol before hand which helped. They were super nice doing it and made it clear I could stop at any time if I wanted to. I felt a bit shaky afterwards so took a taxi home but was fine after a sit down and a cuppa.

What is your pain threshold like?

I have had one without a camera and one with. Both without anaesthesia.

The one with the camera was far more painful, but it took quite a while as they removed a load of polypy tissue at the same time.
I have a fairly high paint olerance but did find it really painful, but I managed. I did take paracetamol before, as advised.

I think if you are worried, then being able to get it done quicker would be worth it

I have to say, the staff were incredibly kind, they knew it bloody hurt and kept making sure I was OK. Got given a cuppa afterwards :D

Good luck x

Ps Deep breathing and trying to zone out helped .

And the nurse was very good at knowing when to chat to distract!

I'm having one but have opted for anaesthetic

jevoudrais · 25/06/2022 14:08

I had one with no anaesthetic and it was fine.

Hope it goes OK!

They don’t do it without GA at our hospital. There’s a reason for that.

I’ve had one with no pain relief before having kids, it was incredibly painful and I would not entertain the idea of having it without anaesthesia now.

Thanks everyone! I’ve just got back home. I took some paracetamol before hand as suggested and didn’t find the camera part too bad. It was super painful when she took the biopsies and I ended up feeling really sick and faint but I managed and I’m so glad it’s done now! Felt like the worlds biggest wuss at the time though. They said it happens all the time but I think they were just trying to make me feel better 😂

The staff were also super lovely here- very handy at distracting and reminding me to breathe (and I got a biscuit at the end!).

Now I’m off to lounge on the sofa with some Galaxy! 🍫

Had one without anaesthesia a few months ago and had polyp removed. I'd personally put up with quite a lot before a general anaesthetic was the preferable option, and though painful at times this didn't come close for me. I actually 'enjoyed' being present for the procedure, able to ask questions, watch on screen and generally feel involved... and in sharp contrast to the pp,I found the nurse's attempts at inane chatter intensely irritating and rather misjudged.

comfortablyfrumpy · 25/06/2022 22:47

Glad it went OK OP. Enjoy your Galaxy, and I hope results are all clear x

Glad it was ok OP. I had the same experience - ie felt faint and shaky through part of it but for anyone reading this who might be having it in future it was manageable and I'm not known for my bravery ! (I also took pain killers beforehand.)
