Having the mirena for possible Endo - am I mad?

I suffer so much with pain and the gp has suggested this. Having read online the reviews are horrendous and now I'm not sure if I doing the right thing 😕 Personal experiences would be gratefully received xx

Had mine 18 months ago - amazing change from how hideous I felt before that. I do still get some pain and spotting but a million times more manageable

Abra1d1 · 23/06/2022 13:57

My mirena has been absolutely fine. I had it inserted at 56 and should have done it about at least a decade earlier, if I hadn't read too many scare stories.
My daughter and lots of her friends, all in their twenties, have them, too.

I’ve had mirena for 12 years. Life changing for me. I was able to go to university, get a degree, have a career change which I can sustain full time. None of this would’ve been possible beforehand, when I was often bedbound with pain, my employment was disrupted, my social life disrupted.

Thanks so much. Great to hear your experiences have been so positive x

Love my mirena. I won't go back until I'm post menopausal :)

WhyDoesItAlways · 23/06/2022 20:01

I've got one. Wouldn't not have one now. I didn't read any online reviews for it and glad I didn't. It's been life changing for me and will be staying until menopause

I've had mirena coils for many years to prevent recurrence of endometriosis but if you've got endo pain then I don't think the coil alone without laparoscopic surgery will be helpful.

I had a laparoscopy to get rid of the endo, then a coil put in as part of the surgery to prevent it coming back. Had the coil removed to have a baby, then have had three since. No more endo or any similar pain.

So I'm a big fan of the coil, but it won't cure endo pain if you already have adhesions. You'd need a laparoscopy first as far as I understand it. Good luck!

I am having the investigations as have been referred to gynae but have been advised it may help in the interim 🙏

My Gynae advised against using a Mirena for endo - because the hormones are localised in the uterus, so it stops menstruating there - but the whole thing with Endo is you menstruate elsewhere outside the uterus - so it might not help.

The other reason she advised against it was that it's a longer term commitment - so if I had one inserted and it didn't work, I'd be stuck with it and continuing to suffer until I could get it out.

I use the mini pill to stop my periods. it works.

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/06/2022 08:41

Used to get horrendous periods and PMS. Was under a clinic at the Hospital for a while my PMS was so bad.

Still have periods on the mirena although they're much, much lighter and the PMS is so much more manageable.

I'm about to have my third one fitted.

Rainbowwww · 29/06/2022 06:19

I can't have the pill as I'm sensitive to progesterone. Although Mirena has it, it would be localised.

I can't have the pill either but I'm fine with the Mirena.

Rainbowwww · 29/06/2022 20:54

Priti - that is reassuring, thank you!

I don't have endometriosis but I have always had heavy periods and in peri-menopause they are seriously impacting my life. I 'm afraid mirena has not worked for me. I've tried 3 times. One got lost and had to be located with an ultra sound. One stayed in but in the wrong place and was painful and the last one came out during v heavy bleeding.

Throughout all of them I bled constantly occasionally v heavy. Doctors keep trying to suggest I try again but I said no this time. Many people get on great and love them.

I'm hoping endometrial ablation will help me.

Absolutely worth a try though. Good luck

I know some people are finding it helpful

I found the coil made my pain worse. It became a countinous strong pain that was there all the time rather than around my period.
I lasted about 3 months and then had it out.

MumbleAlwaysMumble · 30/06/2022 15:24

Btw, the issue wasn't the hormone in the coil as I had the copper coild rather than the mirena (I was advised against the Mirena as I couldn't cope with ANY OCP)

Tdcp · 30/06/2022 15:32

I was bedbound with periods for the first 2 days, they we're AWFUL. I've had 3 small periods in 5 years after the mirena. I already have chronic migraines so I can't comment on that, I've put about a stone in weight on but considering how I was living before it's been almost blissful
