Leaky bladder

I haven't been able to sneeze with confidence for decades (I'm 78), that recently progressed (declined?) to leaking a little bit when I did certain exercises in my Pilates class and if I was walking for any length of time, which I dealt with by using panty liners. But yesterday I went on a group walk, after half an hour we sat down on a bench and when I got up my jeans were wet. I was convinced the bench had been wet but by the time the walk was finished (another hour) I was soaking. Luckily my jeans were dark and I had a jacket I could tie round my waist. This has never happened before.

I will phone the gp this morning - but does anyone have any advice? I frightened myself reading about surgical intervention. I have done pelvic floor exercises in the past, is it too late now? And has anyone used period pants for this problem?

I've got a similar problem - became worse while waiting on 2nd hip replacement. I've been looking at adverts for "Jude" capsules on the internet and wondering if they are as good as the advert says - not exactly cheap for a pensioner. I'll be interested to hear what your gp says.

She tested for a UTI (negative) and gave me an internal - no problems there. It hasn't happened since so goodness knows what was going on. She told me to phone again if I wanted. I will have a look at the tablets you mention, but I'm a bit sceptical. In the meantime I just wear a light pad for exercise.

There's an amazing woman called Elaine Millar. She's a gynae physio and is a specialist in women 'of a certain age'. She states that most bladder weakness problems can be helped/prevented with a routine of pelvic floor exercises for 3 months. Shes also on twitter as @gussiegrips.

I use period pants to catch leaks while running - they are good for light leaks, not so much for heavier leaks but of course are washable and reusable. I'm heading over to gussiegrips right now though.

Listen to Elaine Miller as pp suggested.
Also ask gp for topical oestrogen and vagifem pessaries to repair and restore your urethra.
