Dent / dimple on breast

Hi all,

I found a dimple / dent under one of my breasts which is right at the bottom just above the crease. It isn't a deep hole, it's more or a superficial dimple and it's only visible when I raise my arm. I can't find a lump underneath and the tissue feels really soft and the same as the other breast. I have booked a doctors appointment which is next week but I'm terrified it could be cancer. Everything I google suggests cancer and can't find any other explanation other than fat necrosis which is due to trauma/surgery which I haven't had.

I have breastfed four children (my youngest is 1 month old) so my breasts have taken a battering over the years (plus weight gain/weight loss during and after pregnancy), I have a lot of excess skin and one breast is much larger than the other (the breast with the dimple is the smaller breast), so they don't look the same although the same shape if that makes sense. I have no idea how long it's been like this as it's an awkward angle to notice, as it's right at the bottom and only visible using a mirror underneath. As my breasts are large and heavy it's difficult to notice when I raise my arm.

I wondered if anyone else has had this and had it checked out and all been fine? I need some reassurance to get me through the next few days, I'm so upset and worried! I’m 32 and no family history of cancer.

I didn't want to read and run. I can understand your absolute panic. I found a lump years ago between my breast and my armpit and the waiting was agony as you do expect the worst. Mine was not cancer. I know yours isn't a lump but all you can do is wait and find out. You have done absolutely the right thing getting it checked out as soon as you found it. Stop googling! That's the worst thing you can do right now.

Thanks so much for your message and reassurance, I’m glad your lump turned out to be normal. The waiting is the worst isn’t it 😞 I’m imagining all sorts of scenarios such as my children growing up without a mum. Irrational I know! I guess I need to try to distract myself until I get seen x

In April 2021 I noticed one of my nipples had inverted - which is a sign of cancer according to Google. My doctor referred me to our local breast cancer unit and I was given mammograms and ultrasounds. All tests were clear and I was told that sometimes these things just happen. A week ago I paid for a further mammogram [privately] and there is still no sign of any cancer. I am due my 3-yearly NHS mammogram early 2023.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that yours is nothing to worry about either. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your message, I’m
glad to hear all of your tests have come back clear. Google is the worst thing, I should never have looked! 🙈

Your age and the fact there is no history of breast cancer in your family are both positives too.

What day is your GP app? Have you been yet?

How did you get on? x

Newgirl80 · 27/11/2022 14:25

How did you get on? I have a similar thing and have an appointment at the breast clinic Tuesday.

sarah1303 · 27/11/2022 17:36

Hi, the GP said it was normal and just creased skin, so didn’t refer me. It’s still there but no worse. I hope your appointment goes well x

Hi OP, I would have insisted on a referral personally. I've had breast cancer but a dimple really should be checked with ultrasound. I don't wish to be alarmist but I nearly didn't get a referral as practice nurse was sure my lump was a cyst. I insisted on it and thank God I did! I'd go back and ask to be referred. It's far better to be safe than sorry.

whyhere · 30/11/2022 07:01

Absolutely no intention to worry you OP but, as an ex-nurse from a family that 'does' breast cancer, I would ask for a second opinion, just in case, especially if it still looks the same five months on. Truly hope that it's all fine

Snnowflake · 30/11/2022 07:19

I'm nearly 70 and I don't think I've ever noticed creased skin on my large boobs. I would ask for a mammo or ultrasound.

sarah1303 · 30/11/2022 14:30

Hi, mine was like a crease in the skin, how did your appointment go? X

Thanks for your concern, I do have a dr appointment in 2 weeks so I can ask them to look again. I have severe health anxiety and have been to the doctors to check my breasts probably about 20+ times over the past 5 years, my breasts change a lot because I have been either breastfeeding/pregnant for the past 5 years. I have only ever been referred once and that was only because I was so upset and the GP didn’t think I would take their word for it that it was normal. A different doctor checked this crease about 5 years ago which they said was normal. Since then I have had an ultrasound (due to a different lump I found in the same breast) which was all normal. The reason for me going back 5 months ago was because I spotted it again while using a mirror and it worried me again and I had no before photos to compare it to even though I knew it was probably the same. The GP pointed out I have exactly the same thing on the other breast (it’s harder to spot because I have one bigger than the other). It’s only noticeable if I lift my arm and use a mirror to look right underneath so it’s the sort of thing a normal person would never see because it’s so tucked away. I was reassured to know it’s the same on the other breast and can now see that when I use a mirror. I must admit hearing your comments has triggered massive anxiety in me again so I will definitely be raising this at my appointment 😢 x

Truly didn't mean to make you anxious - so sorry 😢

Snnowflake · 30/11/2022 15:24

Sorry to inform you but it's possible to have breast cancer and no dimple/ crease or lump. Can you arrange a routine ultrasound or mammogram privately if you aren't old enough for the 3 yearly one, In the hope of reducing your anxiety.
