Hair loss after pregnancy

New2TheMNet · 08/06/2022 06:31

My baby is now 3months old and I've gone from having lovely thick locks to a large amount of hair falling out.

I've read that this can be normal although it's worrying as I didn't have thick hair to start with. Any tips or advice would be great? Has anyone else gone through it and what happened?

Thank you x

Pretty much everyone goes through it. Hair loss slows right down in pregnancy so a few months after birth it catches up. It's one of the most irritating phases about having babies. Leaving piles of hair everywhere and that itchy spiky stage as it grows back. It'll settle down.

My baby is nearly 5 months and my hair is everywhere. All over the house.
It's completely normal but very annoying.
I have been recommended to get Nioxin shampoo (my friend used this when she lost hair due to a thyroid problem and it really helped it - my hairdresser also recommended it)
It's a bit pricey but I'll try anything.

Just to mention, with all the hair coming out, I'm always checking my baby's fingers and toes for hair tourniquets (google it if you're not sure what it is) they can be quite dangerous xx

Happened to me after each pregnancy, even the pregnancies ending in early loss.

Hair started falling out about 3 months after birth/loss and fell out in noticeably large amounts for about 3 months. Then back to normal amounts of hair in the shower/hairbrush and the dreaded regrowth phase with an ever-lengthening tide mark of hair grows through your hair lengths.

For me, this was by far the worst physical symptom of pregnancy/birth. I could manage the SPD and the insomnia because it was directly leading to a baby! But post-partum hair loss was like paying for something I already had!

It's just going back to what it was before you were pregnant. It's annoying though but there's nothing you can do about it

Thanks everyone, it's really shocking how much is coming out but it's reassuring to know it's common and should grow back.

Thanks for the tips on the Nioxin shampoo, just read that it shouldn't be used when breastfeeding so I'll need to wait a few more months before I can try it.

@New2TheMNet oh I wasn't aware it could be used when BF. I have stopped BF now so might order some and hopefully it can help.
Definitely not alone - anyone I've spoken to is the exact same

New2TheMNet · 08/06/2022 07:57

@coffeewithmilk only just googled it and wonder if it's just to avoid BF babies having a full head of locks 😜

@New2TheMNet 😂 probably! My son has the typical old man hair at the moment. Bald at the back and long strands up top, it looks so funny

My friend calls it three month mange - or 5 month mange. Certainly something to do with hormones levels. Invest in a good hoover and some drain cleaner.

New2TheMNet · 09/06/2022 06:47

Perhaps I can save all the hair and make myself a wig 😂
oh I hope it stops soon or I might have to have a short hair cut as there will be nothing to tie up.

Thanks everyone for your comments and help. X
