Annoyingly, my period is due to start right in the middle of my summer holiday. I really can't be dealing with the faff especially with young children who'll be want to be in and out of the pool all day!

I've read about this pill online - has anyone any experience of using it?

Not on any other pill/contraception.

Thanks

Yes I've used it before and would use it again if I needed it. I've heard some find their first period afterwards to be hellish but mine was absolutely fine. Didn't notice any side effects from taking it. Just a little annoying trying to remember to take the pills throughout the day (I can't remember if it was 3 or 4 a day)

Soulstirring · 05/06/2022 22:19

I’ve literally just done this for the first time. Ordered via online pharmacist. I took 3 per day for 3 or 4 days just to delay enough for period to start on return from hols. Took about 3 days from stopping and period was as normal. I have almost two strips left to use for a holiday later in the year if needed.

blitzen · 05/06/2022 22:19

I've used it occasionally over the years for 25+ years, including as a 12 year old. It's great for me. No side effects, just delays period. Make sure you start taking it at least three days before due date. Period will start around three days after you stop taking it. Has made my holidays much more enjoyable than they would have been with a period!

nutellingyou · 05/06/2022 23:06

Most people are absolutely fine with it... unfortunately it makes me feel utterly depressed and almost suicidal. Maybe try it out before the holidays?

Einszwei · 05/06/2022 23:08

Worked as intended for me - but I had a decidual cast when I came off it which was very painful.

Oliveandbay · 06/06/2022 06:31

Thanks so much everyone. I think I'll get it form an online pharmacy and give it a go. Fingers crossed it works/minimal side effects!

I was on norethisterone long-term, to stem the bleeding from a uterine fibroid. I had no nasty effects from it whatsoever, it was a blessed relief after nearly two years of constant flooding!

PeaceLily2000 · 06/06/2022 07:16

I took it last month for my wedding. Worked perfectly and had no side effects.
A previous thread about this suggested taking it in advance of the big event you want to avoid having a period during, this 'should' then knock your period on so you won't be on when you originally would have been and don't have to worry about taking tablets 3 times a day on holiday.

OhWifey · 06/06/2022 08:07

Ive used it a couple of times, but it does affect my mood quite a lot (don't use hormonal contraception for this reason). So I'd advise using it for the period before your holiday instead, and consequently shunt your next period past your holiday dates.

Topseyt123 · 06/06/2022 08:15

I used it a few times to postpone periods until after a holiday. It worked for me and there were no obvious nasty side effects when I was taking it.

I won't need it this time as it looks as though, at 55, I am finally through the menopause as I haven't had a period for about a year now. Thankfully! They had been horrendous floods for some years.

SoupDragon · 06/06/2022 08:17

I think it's something you might want to try beforehand. I've used it many times with absolutely no side effects but others on MN have had bad experiences with it.

SoupDragon · 06/06/2022 08:18

My GP has always prescribed more than I need which means I have some left over to nudge a period away from other tricky dates

beststepforward · 06/06/2022 09:10

I've had it but it didn't work for me, twice

Better to go on the pill I think (for me anyway) for a couple of months

Oliveandbay · 06/06/2022 18:11

I did wonder if I took it to delay my June period it would be my July period (holiday time) would just come later so that's really interesting. Thank you.
I will push my June one back and hope the July one gets nudged backwards naturally. Thanks for all the responses everyone.

Actually yes, reading what others have said whilst my period was fine, I did feel far more pms symptoms than usual. It’s the reason I didn’t go back on the pill and had copper iud. I’m going to try the month before to delay period enough before the holiday is due to avoid a stoppy day. Good luck OP!

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 08/06/2022 20:08

I've been taking it long term like a PP mentioned due to a disabling amount of bleeding. No side effects from London term usage and basically never having a period is heaven. I'll stop taking it when I go through menopause.

WalkerWalking · 08/06/2022 20:10

I've only taken this once as a short course, and I had no bleeding at all whilst taking it, but I have to say that it made me ridiculously bloated (like, 5 months pregnant looking)

Definitely re-set the period before as it does make you feel ever so sad! It comes about 2-3days after stopping taking it and you take 3/day maybe 3/4 days before you're due.

DoYouRememberTheInnMiranda · 08/06/2022 20:26

Sorry to jump on - I'm.alrwady taking the POP, Noriday I think. Is it possible to take this on top of that to delay a period for a holiday?

itsgettingweird · 08/06/2022 20:29

I've been on it for 18 months twice a day for gynae issues.

When I fist was given it I went from flooding every 20 minutes for 5-6 hours every day to no period or bleeding at all within 1 day.

The only thing I would warn is that for the first few months i struggled with my emotions massively on this. You may find the same even just for the short period you're on it for.

Oliveandbay · 20/08/2022 07:27

Just to update: I took this the period before my holiday as advised on here and it worked a treat. Pushed every back by two weeks so I was period free for my holiday.

Thanks for all the responses.

My GP claimed it "didn't work like that" when I suggested I might try that once. I could never work out why given all my experience of post-Norethisterone periods said otherwise.

glad it worked out for you.

DD took it for the first time this holiday and, other than being seriously touchy, she was fine with it.

prettyteapotsplease · 20/08/2022 08:18

I took Norethisterone a few times as holidays were often badly timed. They worked well every time but once, the main difficulty is that your period then tends to start on the first day back at work after the holiday which is still less than ideal. They didn't seem to be any worse than usual if I recall.

feelingprettylight · 20/08/2022 21:56

@Oliveandbay that's great news, what a relief.

Just out fo interest, how did you feel when on it?
