Thought I may be peri menopausal as cycles have shortened a lot and are incredibly heavy. Literally putting me out of action for a week each time
scan was fine and I asked can I have bloods to check hormone levels but told no.

they just want me to have a mirena or go on progesterone pill but hormones don’t suit me and they’ve said well that’s it there’s no more they can do then.

should I be pushing for bloods ?

What do you want them to offer you?
all HRT is hormonal - so your probably not a suitable candidate for it if you react badly to them.
simiar boat here - I hated the POP and have heard many horror stories about the coil that I couldn’t even contemplate it - so also stuck with periods that are shorter (but fortunately lighter in my case).

Mirena is part if the treatment options for heavy periods - my doctor said, we'll start with tranexamic acid, then we can try mirena, and there's a range of other options we could work through with hysterectomy at the end, but we'll stop when we find what works. And gir ne, it was txa.

Mirena can also be used as part of managing perimenopause and menopause. Unfortunately, hormones are very individual, so what works brilliantly for one woman might be terrible for the next. Sometimes that can be resolved by waiting a few months, sometimes by changing brand to something with a different formulation, and sometimes not with hormones at all, and there is an element of experimentation in finding out.

At the very least, I'd want a blood test to check my iron levels, though.

I just wanted bloods to check there weren’t any hormone imbalances or anaemia etc

it’s such a huge change in the last year that I was worried and want to know why because I feel awful

What scan did you have? I've had both fibroids and polyps. Huge fibroid wasn't picked up from ultrasound (both external and transvaginal). On another occasion polyps were not confirmed by transvaginal ultrasound. Both were only properly diagnosed from hysteroscopies. I was also offered the coil and pill before they found the fibroid, and was noted as refusing treatment when I declined. I was willing to take hormone based treatment if it were confirmed that the problem was hormonal, but like you I've had bad experience with it in the past and don't want it unless I know that the issue is hormonal, otherwise it's just masking the problem and giving me all the side effects.

it was an ultrasound they did abdominal then transvaginal and said everything was ‘normal’

Over active thyroid can cause heavy periods, so worth asking for a blood test to check thyroid function.

londonmummy1966 · 26/05/2022 15:01

I think that you should go back to the GP and ask them again for blood tests for iron and thyroid levels and a scrip for TRX. If they refuse ask them to put that in writing with their reasoning - bet they'll do it then.

Caneparrot · 26/05/2022 15:10

Hormone bloods totally pointless at this stage (as PP says levels fluctuate, and it sounds as if you are peri menopausal which doesn’t need a blood test to diagnose). However if you are bleeding heavily a fully blood count is very reasonable as well as thyroid. Perhaps if you were mentioning hormones a lot and then saying you didn’t want to take hormones the Gp addressed that as your chief concern.

"i was told it’s not the menopause/ peri menopause"

Well that's highly likely to be not true.
Why dont you make another appointment to see a different GP and be polite but firm and say you're not happy with this and ask what can be done. Don't be fobbed off.

You also need to do a bit of research on all the menopause options and work out what you want so that you go in knowledgeable.
