Whenever, I plan a holiday couple of months in advance, my period never miss a chance to come along!. so this time going for a beach holiday dreading its going to happen :(
So I checked with Boots if there was a tablet to delay them, And I was told ‘Yes’ but need a doctor prescription.I further did some investigation and found on NHS period delaying tablets have high blood clot risk.. Now I do not know what to do :(

Most GPs do not prescribe them any more. You can get them from online GP services and they assess your risk before prescribing.

Ive recently taken the tablets for delaying periods for a holiday and had absolutely no issues. I was told it wasnt something that they would prescribe on the NHS but that they could prescribe it as a private prescription cost about £18 for 50 tablets (have to take 3 a day)

I was a bit worried about side effects before taking it, but didnt have anything at all. I think the name of the pill was provera

Sorry to hear that. Would you consider buying period knickers? Wuka is an excellent brand and they have swimwear as well. Perhaps with a tampon you could go swimming in the sea?

I've had norethisterone prescribed for a holiday before but I've also bought it online through boots. They have an online dr service that asks you a few questions to assess your risk.

Norethisterone is essentially just a high dose of a regular contraceptive pill. The dr only prescribed a minimum number of tablets to get me through the holiday though, they don't like giving loads.

Can I be the first to suggest a mooncup? I got mine in desperation as someone who could not tolerate tampons, going on holiday to a snorkelling destination and expecting my period to arrive! I thought that it would be awful because tampons are so uncomfortable to me, but once the mooncup was in, I honestly could not tell it was there and could snorkel all week long without any trouble. It has changed my life, periods hardly bother me any more.

RosieRoww · 23/05/2022 22:02

I have always used Norethistetone, and never had any issues, not once.

My GP prescribed them for me without fuss.

I'm in the same boat OP except my wedding Confused I did get some nothisterone from an online pharmacy but blood clot risk + 12 hour honeymoon flight means I don't want to take them.

Instead I'm going to try every old wives tale in the book to induce it to start a couple of days early which will mean it's tailing off by the wedding day.

So far in my repertoire;

Ginger tea
Parsley tea
Vitamin C
Hot water bottle on the abdomen
Moderate exercise
Sex / orgasms

It might all be absolute nonsense and not work at all, but worth anything I can throw at it to avoid being on heavy Day 1 on the wedding day.

Haggisfish3 · 23/05/2022 22:07

I got norethisterone no problem from gp.

Weatherwithme · 23/05/2022 22:08

you can just take the normal pill without a break

If you do end up getting the tablets, don't do what I did and miss one. My period started like that scene of the lift from The Shining, during my beach holiday.

Sharming · 23/05/2022 22:23

Take the tablets - stop your period.

Honestly I don't know why women allow themselves to suffer when there is the medical help available to make this problem go away.

I have a family history of blood clots and I was prescribed it. It was fine, and works like a dream.

emmathedilemma · 24/05/2022 08:37

I got norethisterone from Lloyds pharmacy once when i couldn't get a GP appointment in time but I'd previously had it off my Dr. I did an online order and then they did some basic health checks when I collected it. Interestingly I can't tolerate the combined or mini pill but this works fine for me with minimal side effects.

AWeekinJanuary · 24/05/2022 08:46

I always get norethisterone from my GP. I never realised some GPs won’t prescribe it, but if you have any problems just use a private prescription.

If flying long haul it just makes the advice to move about every hour or so more important. I do this anyway.
