Blood in urine

Just after a hand hold really!

Both deceased parents diabetic (later life diagnosed)

I've been passing urine more frequently recently and have been waking up to go every 2-3 hours in the night (Can't remember the last time I had an undisturbed sleep)

Thought I may have a water infection as I also have middle back pain on my left side.

Took sample to GP this morning.
Rang for results this evening to be told sample is being sent for further investigation as blood is present.

I have the Mirena coil so don't have periods so I know it's not that.

I am a 20 plus a day smoker and have been for over 30 years (Before you comment on that, I know...)

All the surgery said was to drink plenty of fluids over the weekend and wait for them to call back.

Now I've obviously googled ( Again, I know...) and am obviously panicking.

If anyone has any advice or has been through the same and can stop me stressing all weekend it would really be appreciated.

TIA

Please push for a very early investigation. I'm sorry but a loved one who had this with back pain had very bad news. I wish she had been diagnosed earlier.

A bad UTI could easily have blood in a sample.
A nurse once called my sample "filthy" because it lit up all the colours on the sample test stick!

I don't understand the concern, this sounds like a kidney infection to me. When you say it's been ages, are we talking about a few weeks, or a few months? It's possible to have a low grade infection for ages. Not all urinary tract infections flare up in a couple of days.

Obviously there are instances where it could be something more sinister, but honestly, for once, I'm in the "think horses, not zebras" group.

If you started with frequency, and ended up with pain on one side, it's because the uti wasn't dealt with, and now it's tracked up to your kidney.

You'll need strong antibiotics, but you're getting answers, and will feel better soon.

Btw, no one would be able to do anything, even midweek, because it takes time to culture the bugs to see which ones.

They could, theoretically start you on some broad antibiotics and see if they're the right ones when the test comes back, but they are so wary these days.

If you start feeling really seriously unwell, confused, vomiting etc, go to a and e over the weekend and they'll start you on something.

Otherwise, plenty of cystemme, water, hot water bottle can help.

Neurofen/panadol depending on what you can take. And seriously put your feet up. Rest is v important.

Good luck!
