Heavy period?

What would actually be classed as a heavy period?

Mine have been getting worse the last two years (I'm 35). My cycle is off to, shortest one was 25 days and longest 44 but generally can be anywhere between 26-38 days. First 2 days ill bleed through a super plus tampon in an hour and a half so have to use a pad to back up. First night I have to set an alarm in the middle of the night once or twice to change my tampon and pad. It seems to come out like a waterfall on the toilet and takes a few flushes and bleach to leave the bottom of the toilet bowl which with a family at home can be embarrassing and at work a total nightmare in an office environment.

Also have horrible pain whilst it's heavy in my belly, back and down into my thighs.

This heavy time only lasts 2 days and the rest of the cycle (5-6 days) but it's leaving me feel drained and if I have work these first two days I dread it as it's not always easy to get to a toilet.

Would a trip to the gp be worth a try or not bother as it's only 2 of my 5-6 days it's like this?

Get a Mirena, best thing I ever did! Smile

Photosymphysis · 30/03/2022 06:24

I second the mirena

The local progestogen thins the uterine lining. Most women have no period at all on it, though for some it's just (much) lighter

Go see your gp. I'm currently in hospital for severe anaemia related to bleeding in between periods. Been like that for a few years and I took not much notice until I could no longer move about without getting extremely drained. Standing up left me out of breath! Don't ignore it!

Its now safe to take certain contraceptive pills back to back and not have a period at all. I would talk to your GP or get a referral to an Ob/Gyn if you can to make sure there aren't any other reasons for your very heavy periods.

feckingcovid · 30/03/2022 09:02

Sadly I can't take hormones like the pill so I imagine the merina coil would be a no go too.

Feel awful today, luckily I'm not at work so should be over the worst by tomorrow but all I want to do is go back to bed Sad

What you're describing would be classed as a heavy period. Its not something you should inherently put up with. Even feeling like this for 2 out of 5-6 days is 2 days too many.

Do go and see your GP about this issue. I would at the same time ask to be referred to a gynaecologist because you need to know what the root cause of this is in addition to treating the symptoms. You may well be offered the Mirena by the GP; it certainly has its uses and it is cheap but it is not suitable for all women to use.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/03/2022 09:05

I would certainly request a referral to a gynae; you should not have to put up with feeling like this. Heavy and or painful bleeding is something gynaes see in women; do not delay seeking help for this from such a person.

Thankyou. I'm going to give the doctors a call today

That definitely meets the NHS description of heavy!
I wouldn't recommend the mirena personally, it made mine even worse!

thisplaceisweird · 30/03/2022 13:43

I used to have similar and then I switched to a cup plus light period pants on my heaviest days which fixed everything.

isitspringyet23 · 30/03/2022 13:52

My gp prescribed me tablets to take at the start when it's at its heaviest , tranexamic acid - not actually had to use them yet but they are supposed to help control/ reduce bleeding .

emmathedilemma · 30/03/2022 14:29

@isitspringyet23 it does help, i'd take it as soon as you start bleeding. I can get away with only taking it for the first couple of days but you can take it for longer if needed. I tend to do full dose for a couple of days and then maybe half dose for a day.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/03/2022 15:04

You need to determine why this is happening. Although tranexamic acid tablets do work for some they do not work for all (me included, they had no effect whatsoever on my heavy bleeding). The reason in my case was due to estrogen and progesterone rising and crashing over and over again (I had too much estrogen and not enough progesterone).
