Blocked nose for AGES!

SpringHasSprungYay · 29/03/2022 20:20

Have had a blocked nose for about 4 months.
Wondering if it's:

A. HRT

B. peri
C. Pollution
D. Allergy

I have never had this before.
I'm not ill. My nose is just permanently congested 😔

Call you GP. I put up with this for years, turns out I had nasal polyps. A short course of steroids sorted it out.

SpringHasSprungYay · 29/03/2022 22:29

Have booked to speak to my GP. Thank you! Will mention that.

Had a phone call appointment with GP, because god forbid they might actually want to look at a bloody patient!

She has suggested antihistamine & salt spray. Before trying steroids.
She didn't really seem to know what the steroids were for though, just that "that's what we give people with this issue"

I really don't feel reassured when talking to some doctors 😔

Only thing to check is, have you been taking sudafed for this regularly?

Unfortunately while it can clear a blocked nose in the short term, I think it can cause one if used longer term so worth considering.

SpringHasSprungYay · 09/04/2022 23:24

Not been taking anything.

I was about to suggest antihistamines for hayfever. I never used to have it pre 30s. Some years its bad, some its only later in the year. This year due to the unseasonal hot weather we had we are getting a lot of tree blossoms together which could have overloaded your immune system this time.

If one antihistamine doesn't work then do try another with a different active ingredient.

Did you have covid four months ago?

I've had a runny nose since covid in December. I know it's not the same situation but it has been 4 months of this constant runny nose which I'd never had prior to covid. No solutions for you, I'm sorry to say. Just wondering.

Would you consider booking an appointment with a private ENT consultant? I don't have health insurance but for a couple of recent issues, I've paid out of pocket for private care so that an actual person can look at me instead of signing me up for the same old 'happy are those who believe without seeing' antics of GPs over the phone these days.

I had this for months. Went to see an ENT turns out I have allergic rhinitis. Pollution.

Nasal washes twice a day. Doesnt really
Help though

Not had covid as far as I'm aware.

I've had a blocked nose as long as I can remember, and also endometriosis
Both these things can be estrogen related
Its getting better in peri
But that comes with its own problems !

GottaLoveTheCold · 12/04/2022 07:30

Alcohol can cause congestion if you’re sensitive to it? Some people have a gene that can’t produce the enzyme that processes it effectively. My SIL gets bunged up if she drinks wine, but not as bad with spirits.

I'm taking hrt & was wondering if it was related. The doc dismissed this when i asked.

I had rhinitis years ago and found that cooking with gas triggered it. Since having an electric oven I’ve been fine.

Calafsidentity · 15/04/2022 18:24

OK I hesitate to mention this op, because it's very unlikely, and I have no medical training whatsoever, but a friend of mine had terrible problems with blocked nose, sinusitis etc, and then she had an unrelated heart operation to replace a faulty valve, and all the symptoms disappeared completely! Might be worth checking out?

On the other hand, it could be something as simple as an allergy to dust mites!

justthecat · 15/04/2022 18:31

Temporary solution but olbas oil is your friend

headspin10 · 15/04/2022 18:38

I had blocked nose / sinusitis every winter for months as a child, went vegan as an adult and completely gone, must have been dairy allergy.

(IBS also completely disappeared too which was another lovely surprise!)
