Not sure if this is right place to post few weeks ago had some irregular bleeding had bloods done and they've come back with raised MCV and ALT. I know AMY IS related to liver but what about MCV? Sitting myself doctor wants repeat bloods in 2.5 weeks

If you have raised MCV it means your red blood cells are larger than normal, it's called macrocytic anaemia. Commonly caused by b12 deficiency (I have this and raised MCV was the first indication). I would imagine they will want to check your b12 levels and possibly investigate for causes of deficiency if it comes back low. Are you vegetarian/vegan?

Holidayyys · 18/03/2022 12:51

No I'm not vegetarian or vegan. I'm worried though as would b12 also mean raised ALT? The receptionist didn't obviously have a clue. Just told me they were raised and needed repeating

I don't think so, although I also had raised alt at a recent blood test and the doc said that on its own it's not really relevant so I guess they might just look into it further at the next test.
Do you have any symptoms of b12 deficiency? Fatigue, odd sensations/pins and needles in hands/legs, 'sighing', sore tongue, palpitations?

MalbecandToast · 18/03/2022 13:32

Do you drink moderately? B12 deficiency is common with heavy drinkers as are abnormal liver results. Absolutely no judgement just an observation. DH had this a few years ago when he drank a few glasses of wine most evenings, does told him it doesn't need to be massively excessive consumption to cause damage to your liver so he stopped altogether.

No symptons of b12 deficiency. Yes I drink more than I should 3 occassionally 4 bottles of white wine over the weekend (fri-sun) but don't drink anything during the week. Has your husband had any long lasting damage or did stopping drinking help.

So got a print out of my results ALT is 40, MCV is 101fl and MCH is 32.1 if I have googled correctly (not wise I know) then they are all very much just out of range of normal I think.

No long term damage at all, re-tested after 6 months and the results returned to normal range Smile

Thats great news.
