Tranexamic Acid for Heavy Periods

Hello

I've just been prescribed tranexamic acid for my period. It's always been ridiculously heavy but more so in the last few years - it's hard to manage when out without access to loo so want to use it when travelling or out for a few hours.

GP said it works by clotting the blood more so there's less flow. She said it doesn't reduce the quantity but clots it more.

Has anyone used it for heavy periods ... my concern is I'll just end up with lots more clots (I have enough of those already!!). What changes did you notice?

Reluctant to use really but I'm struggling to manage at times! Knowing what to expect might help I think Smile

Thanks

I’ve used it in the past for very heavy periods; it didn’t massively help as it made the flow a little lighter but my period lasted a few days longer. Nothing awful though, definitely give it a try.

It absolutely does reduce clots (for me)
Makes my period much less crampy and painful too. The flow virtually stops.
You have to take it regularly on the days you are heavy otherwise after 4 hrs, you're back to square one.
I only need it for either two or 3 days.
Game changer for me. Smile

Thank you - think I'll give it a go, just worried about even more clots. Guess it varies person to person so only one way to find out!

Yes it worked a treat for me, definitely try it

I love it - revolutionary for me. Take it as soon as you start. Makes mine much lighter - almost normal

It didn't make any difference to me unfortunately. I also took transmefic acid (sp??) to help with the pains but it wasn't any good either. Good luck op. It's naff suffering every month. You have my sympathies

123rd · 16/03/2022 20:47

Whoops I meant I also took mefanamic (sp???) acid for the pain

I love it. Absolute game changer. I was severely anaemic and my second day of period was so heavy I struggled to leave the house. I take it as soon as I come on and it’s soooo much better now. I’m on iron as well and don’t need meds for pain but they’re completely different now. No more chunks or clots and it’s actually lighter in colour and runnier if that’s not tmi and any use.

Give it a go.

I'm on it and it works really well. It doesn't for some but worth a try.

Also if you haven't already, get a scan to rule out other causes of heavy needling.

SmallOrFarAway · 16/03/2022 20:52

Didn't work for me but mefenemic acid (sp?) worked a treat

ConfusedGin · 16/03/2022 20:54

It's hit and miss for me. Some months it's amazing. Other months, like now Hmm, it doesn't seem to be making that much difference. It tends to help control the early bleeding so it's manageable but around day 10 I have horrible, credit card sized clots. Not sure if that's the result of the TX acid or the massive fibroids though. I'll be glad when they're gone!

I was wondering why your GP has not seemingly referred you to a gynaecologist.
Tablets like this are all well and good but do not work for everyone and at best only treat the symptoms with varying degrees of success. Such tablets do not either address the root cause. If fibroids for instance are the root cause these tablets will have no effect.

I’ve had heavy bleeding and the only measure that stopped it was ablation surgery.

It works great for me, also take mefenamic acid for period pain as well

readingmynightaway · 18/08/2023 10:09

I strongly suggest you use it
I went on it this year, and I now do not need to worry about looking at myself worriedly it was noticeable i had a heavy period. It was very unpleasant.
The flow reduces quicker in a few days.
I would recommend you give it ago and see for yourself if you can.
I have to take 2 tablets 4 times a day, which I find I sometimes need to remember to keep that up.
