Untreated sti

Hi,

Really embarrassing situation. I've got a couple of gyno issues that I'm having to have investigated.

I've been told to go for an sti check to see if I do have anything. I've been with my partner for 10 years and never shown any symptoms of anything.

Is it possible that I could have an sti from 10 years ago before I met my current partner? I'm terrified and can't calm down at the thought it has caused irreversible damage.

Both definitely not been with anyone else either, no doubt with that one.

Thank you

Try not to worry. They are probably just done as routine because they can’t always trust that everyone is 100% truthful or faithful.

I mean it is entirely possible, but after all this time you may have had at least something to alert you, discharge, smells, aches, bleeding. Have you ever been pregnant? Where I am they routinely check you for the major STDs, which is how I know I'm std free. I did some swabs when I was in my early 20s but was too chicken to to the HIV test.

I'm sure you are fine, don't catastrophise, there is literally nothing you can do to change the future outcome of the tests, you can only cross the bridge of potential treatment when you come to it. Good luck!

As mentioned in the attached link, STI symptoms might develop within a few days or weeks, but sometimes they do not appear until months or even years later. Someone can have an STI contracted from a previous partner and have no symptoms for many years, yet might pass it on to their partner. This is why it's best for both to get checked for the main ones when starting a new relationship. www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/sexual-health/how-soon-do-sti-symptoms-appear/

Whatever it is, generally STIs can be treated or well controlled nowadays. If you're examined at a sexual health centre, please don't be embarrassed, it's what they do best.

Thank you so much for replying. I'm in a really bad state so I'm so appreciative.

No symptoms at all - I have endometriosis which has just been diagnosed and they've found fluid on one Fallopian tube which they've said could be an infection. Google has led me to pelvic inflammatory etc and infertility.

According to Google it is often caused by an sti. My partner got tested not long into our relationship and he was negative (already sleeping together unprotected by this stage) and i had an hiv test but not an sti test.

I have had unprotected sex with a long term partner before hand and I did have a one night stand partially unprotected for a matter of minutes which is where this terror is stemming from.
Unprotected sex with one night stand was 12 years ago. Then got back with my long term partner and continued relations for over a year after that with no symptoms.

Im aware I've been stupid so please no one highlight this. Im distraught that I've been such an idiot in my teenage years that im now potentially going to pay for it.

Sorry for all the gross details !! I feel so isolated and don't know where to turn.

No I've never been pregnant. This has came up as I've had tests for endometriosis which have came back positive (as long suspected way back in my teens!) I'm currently trying to conceive but only just started and then had this news about tube and the request to do an sti check!! Thank you again everyone

My partner of 10 years never had any symptoms either at all.

Sorry I'm going away now Grin

ok goodness you're not stupid, many of us have had unprotected sex at one time or another and not got tested.

Sorry to hear about the endometriosis but good that it's been diagnosed as some women can struggle for years before finding out what it is. From a quick google fluid on a fallopian tube can be due to several things, including endometriosis. Getting checked for STIs sounds like a ruling out exercise more than anything else.

@over50andfab

Thank you thank you.

I'm just lying here kicking myself thinking why the hell was I so naive!!!

Thank you for looking it up too - that means a lot to me. I did see endo is listed too but it's just terrified me the way he asked about stis and wanted a test. I feel mortified at my age to be going for an sti test when I'm in such a wonderful long term relationship!

♥️

It might help to know that STI testing is something everyone should do and still good to do in a relationship if not done at the start. This is seen as being responsible and as they say, better to know (and be reassured) than afraid to test. Think of them like testing for anything else eg Covid.

STI tests generally can be done postally if there are no symptoms, though in clinic they might test for more eg trichomoniasis.

leopardtigerlion · 16/03/2022 18:10

Do you think it is very likely that I have got an untreated sti from 10-12 years ago?

I know nobody can predict this for me but it's just baffling me x

My tests were all negative 😊
