Sad goodbye to Mirena

My first Mirena went in in 1994; it was brilliant, I loved it, and have had a series of them between then and now.

My last one was removed today and try as we might we couldn't get a new one into my post-menopausal cervix.

I shed a tear.

Why couldn't a new one be inserted, what happens to the cervix at menopause?

teezletangler · 16/01/2023 01:50

Dumb question. If you're post-menopausal, why would you need a Mirena?

I think Minera can be used as the progesterone part of hrt.

I was glad to get rid of my mirena and almost celebrated. Disastrous attempt to control heavy bleeding but made things much worse.

It didn't like me and the feeling ended up being mutual. 🙄😃

GP said it gradually tightens up and becomes less flexible. I used ovestin for a fortnight beforehand but it didn't help enough. For context I was 63 at the time and my cervix was well within its rights to say it was no longer open for business.

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime I don't mean to be rude or offensive here but why were you using birth control in your sixties? Was it for another hormonal reason? (Asking as I'm perimenopausal myself)

MaireadMcSweeney · 16/01/2023 09:42

Oh no that's a shame! I love my mirena but I'm not excited about having it changed soon. Do you need it for progesterone? I hadn't really thought about having it into your 60s but it makes sense

cushioncovers · 16/01/2023 09:42

Yes the mirena is used as part of HRT. It's not just birth control.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 16/01/2023 15:03

As above - used it as part of my HRT. And FWIW I plan to stay on HRT for the rest of my life!
