Freak period

Workinghardeveryday · 11/03/2022 19:49

I have just got my period after being very late due to having Covid.

Omg. Pads filled in 30 minutes. Bad nights sleep, changing pads regularly etc.

I have a fairly new mattress. I have mattress protector but I really don’t want to ruin my new mattress!

All I can think of doing is putting a bin liner under mattress protector and bottom sheet.

Any better ideas?

This is really heavy, how long has it continued for? I would actually call 111 because that’s a lot and can actually be dangerous blood loss wise.

spacehardware · 11/03/2022 19:53

You poor thing. My periods are sometimes so bad I use thick night time towels during day in a pair of period pants - no bleed through. Assuming you have none of those, I would fold a bin liner with a towel over it under the sheet. Then you won't find the plastic slippy/uncomfortable. Try to lie on your side, I find I back bleed if I lie on my back on heaviest nights

BluerThanRobinsEggs · 11/03/2022 20:19

It's a Covid thing. There's plenty of anecdotal evidence out there - because no one would even think to collect actual data on women - that periods are affected by covid and vaccines.

Ulchabhan · 11/03/2022 20:35

Is there any chance you might be having a miscarriage? I would call 111 with that amount of blood loss. It might be Covid related but I would double check just to rule out anything more serious.

Workinghardeveryday · 11/03/2022 21:04

Thank you all so much.

I really don’t think it’s a miscarriage, dp had snip 10 years ago. It must be a Covid thing.

It has been like this since about midnight last night so not too long.

Apart from feeling more bloated than normal and a bit shaky I am okay. Had period pains since Monday but only started yesterday afternoon.

I have the bin liner all set up and will put a towel on top of it under protector sheet and bottom sheet, thank you @spacehardware 😊

If you’ve been bleeding through a maxi pad every half hour for 24 hours then you should probably go to A&E or at the very least call 111. That’s a lot of blood loss and is not normal whatever the cause. I don’t wish to scare you, and hopefully the bleeding has slowed by now, but there was a woman on here a while back who survived only because of a hospital visit. Shakiness is not great. Make sure they take you seriously if you call 111. Heavy menstrual blood loss is still blood loss.

LovedayCL · 12/03/2022 00:27

And the fact you’re needing all that protection suggests it hasn’t slowed, I really think you should be seen.

I had this for three weeks at the end of last year, horrendous bleeding and pain out of nowhere. I spoke to the doctors about three times, they weren't especially concerned, they gave me traxemic acid, memfemic acid and iron tablets as the blood loss made me anemic. The heavy bleeding stopped after a few days on the traxemic acid. I had a follow up ultrasound but they couldn't find an obvious cause. I think it was maybe a miscarriage or just random hormonal event

Kelp23 · 15/03/2022 20:32

I had similar for a few months. Randomly heavy periods. Go and get it checked out. They are least can give meds to stop the bleeding. I ended up with an ultrasound which found a massive cyst on my ovary. It's nothing sinister but I'm having surgery to get it removed next month. Hope you feel better soon

Ringsender2 · 21/03/2022 01:41

Hi @Workinghardeveryday I remembered your post as I now find myself in the same position as you were. Did you end up seeing anyone, or did your body sort itself out?

I had covid last month but am also menopausal, so the reason for it could be either, or both (oh joy!). I've had a period in the meantime and that was light.

I'm changing pads every half hour, or a super tampon plus pad every hour. I've bled through onto 3 pairs of trousers today. It's like a frigging abbatoir.

Darbs76 · 21/03/2022 06:49

Definitely contract 111. My DD who was 12 at the time had this when she started her first period. I took her to the hospital for bloods and had to take her in A&E as she couldn’t even walk without help. She was sat on the chair for 10 mins and there was blood on it. They said her iron was ok, and went home with meds to stop the bleeding. Fast forward a week, bleeding hadn’t stopped, doctor fobbed me off with iron (said it had been borderline at the hospital the week before) but ended up taking her back to A&E when she couldn’t get to the bathroom without help. She ended up with 2 pints of blood transfused as her iron had dropped dangerously low. It took 3 lots of meds to stop the bleeding, 27 days it went on for. 18 months later and she’s still having problems with low iron, dizzyness etc. Please do get medical help. I thought maybe I was being a bit OTT going to A&E with a period but they told me anymore problems like that go straight there

GeneLovesJezebel · 21/03/2022 06:52

I had this due to peri menopause so had a coil fitted. Anaemia is horrible.

Ringsender2 · 21/03/2022 08:00

Thanks both. Am travelling today. Really not looking forward to the queues and being too far from a loo. I gave quite a bit of thought to cancelling it, which is pretty shit. It's like a time-limited invisible disability, and my heart goes out to IBS sufferers, who must need to be in a meerkat state of alertness as to where the nearest facilities are. I'm going to talk to my GP next week about HRT - I can't be going on like this!

(There has been quite a lot of menopause awareness raising recently, and although flooding is listed as an issue, the actual practical implications of it hadn't hit home)

Ringsender2 · 21/03/2022 08:28

And @Darbs76 your poor DD. Being only 12 years old and having to deal with that Sad

Darbs76 · 21/03/2022 08:33

@Ringsender2 I know, I told her 5 days and it will probably be over, and it did seem to be normal for the first 5 days and then it really kicked off. She’s not been normal since it began, hoping the paediatrician she’s now under can find out what’s wrong as that’s not normal

comfortablyfrumpy · 21/03/2022 09:10

Could it be peri?
Mine went likecthis, abd they really dragged on.

I have them again (post menopause) but now find I have polyps or similar, so they seem to be the cause

Either way, if you get a recurrence, worth seeing your GP.

Samarie123 · 22/03/2022 16:33

Rather that put a plastic bin liner over your mattress, try those pampers square sheets. They’re meant for child night accidents but are great too for heavy periods.
