Get a copy of your blood tests results. There is a huge difference between normal and optimal for something like ferritin,B12, vitamin D - all of which can cause hair thinning.

For example if the lab reference range for ferritin is 13- 150 and your results are 14 then you will be marked as “normal” but you may see improvements if you boost your levels up above 90.

I think our labs reference range for b12 is 150-1000 but the reports do say that, if patients is symptomatic, at 150 to consider treatment.

Yes - get your results. Then go see a dermatologist privately who specialises in this area, and see what they suggest

It could also be perimenopause, so you ask to be checked for that and explore HRT

Try not to panic though, just because it’s got a thinner doesn’t mean you are going to loose it all. Hair does get thinner as we get older.

Thank you, I think my ferritin was 33, they didn’t check my b12, only thyroid, ferritin and vitamin D.

Maybe I should go back to GP, cannot afford a private dermatologist right now :(

Women can have symptoms such as hair loss with ferritin under 50.

Low zinc can also cause hair loss.

Thinking hair is very, very common in peri-menopause, and you are absolutely not too young. Peri can last more than a decade before full menopause.

I'm thinning and also totally losing hair at the front. Blood tests 3 years ago resulted in doctor telling me it was 'hormonal' and not much they could do.

Recent night sweats & horrendous mood swings meant I asked for appt to discuss options.

I'm on the pill, and still having regular periods. Doctor just told me to run 3 packs of pills together and then have a week off. I tried to ask about the hair loss, along with the sweats etc. She told me this would probably solve it, and I couldn't be menopausal as I'm too young. (42)

I'm accepting the fact that I'm going bald, and just try to avoid having my photo taken tbh.

I could just scream over the bullshit women have to contend with when trying to get help. You are not too young. So many doctors/GP's are absolutely useless when it comes to peri/menopause. If you can afford to go to a peri/menopause clinic, I highly recommend it. It's not as expensive as you might think, and it's totally worth it.

I'm also 44 and started on HRT a few weeks ago. Blood tests only showed low Vit D and iron. GP said she would prescribe based on my symptoms as blood tests can change day to day. See a different GP if you can or make a complaint to the practice manager quoting the NICE guidance

There is a menopause board. Try posting there as there are so many knowledgeable women Thanks

misslml · 10/03/2022 20:55

I was exact same few months ago including hair falling out loads of it, my vitamin d and calcium were dangerously low and had to take supplements including biotin and now my baldy patches having grown back in again.
