It's not uncommon, I know several friends who were recalled for the same thing in the last 2-3 years. Most people will go for the appointment and be reassured and discharged.
I understand it's a really worrying time but you will feel better after being seen Daffodil

I had moderate grade dyskariosis and positive hpv and went for a colposcopy, when there they found high grade and said they could treat it there and then. I agreed and they removed the infected area of my cervix, I think I had the cone procedure!
Results came back with no cancer and my last smear was hpv clear! Try not to panic low grade is very very early stages! Even high grade is very treatable!

Onetwo34567890 · 02/03/2022 14:46

And dyskariosis does not mean cancer just very mild pre cancerous cells!

Alwayssosleepy · 02/03/2022 20:20

I had a colposcopy today for low grade and hpv. My first colposcopy. They took biopsies. It was like having a smear. I feel so much better for going for it. Slight discomfort but no worse than a smear. I was convinced I had cancer and was dying. Biopsy results will be back in 4 weeks. Feel free to PM if you want more info on todays procedure x

Did they give you an indication today what they thought? I don't think I could bear a tortuous 4 week wait 😭. My anxiety is so bad as is

I had this years ago and I'm pleased to say all is fine now.

hauntedbillybass · 02/03/2022 21:21

I had CIN3. 2 rounds of loop diathermy and it's gone, 11 years on and I'm clear.

Good luck op Grin

Alwayssosleepy · 03/03/2022 07:52

OP - it's my understanding that:
My smear confirmed low grade. At the colposcopy they saw cell changes in the cervix and vagina wall. This is not uncommon they took biopsies to do a further check if low grade. This is a more detailed check. If still low grade then they monitor with yearly smears. If high grade then they will remove. Even if high grade, they could wait to remove eg if pregnant

You’re right we deffo get the brunt of it as women! I had my smear in the February just before first lockdown and then due to backlogs I didn’t receive any results until I got a phone call from the hospital themselves at the beginning of may asking me to come in in a couple of days regarding my smear results! They didn’t say anything else and like you I suffer severe anxiety and was petrified!!
I called my doctor who said it was moderate grade and they just wanted to check it. By the time I’d got to the hospital it was high grade but I had done all the googling by then so I was prepared that I could be told there and then they could remove the cells so I already knew I was going to say yes if this happened.
I had already had a colposcopy the year before when I had low grade so I knew what to expect! If your check goes ok they will recall you for another smear in a year I think, and if you still have HPV they will do another colposcopy but your body can also clear it on its own!
Best of wishes Flowers hope all goes well!

I'm currently going through this at the moment, honestly the worst of it all is the waiting. Waiting for smear results, biopsy and now LLETZ results, I think I had my smear in September and we're in March now. It's maybe worthwhile phoning the Colposcopy department to ask if they can keep you in mind for any cancellation appointments.
The Colposcopy appointment was nowhere near as scary as I envisioned, I took a couple of painkillers an hour beforehand and for me personally, the biopsy/treatment didn't hurt that much.

SwayingInTime · 03/03/2022 15:31

I have been today for colposcopy for the same reason. The Dr decided that the changes identified were all due to the HPV only and that I could go back to a three year recall for my smear. First I was pleased but now worried about waiting so long. The procedure was fine, only the speculum was uncomfortable.

rosesarenaff · 03/03/2022 15:41

I have had this with moderate grade dyskaryosis and HPV.

I was referred for a colposcopy. I found it a little bit painful- a bit more painful then a smear test. However, the consultant was very reassuring and said that whilst she couldn't say either way if it was cancer or not that in her opinion (and was an opinion only) that she didn't believe it to be cancer. Had the results back and they confirmed it wasn't cancer but high grade and I had it removed. Again a bit painful but nothing terrible.

Had yearly smears after and had the same thing again a couple of years later. This time it didn't require removal and I was monitored with yearly smears and eventually gone back to 3 yearly.

I understand how stressful this is. It was all I could think about for several months and was absolutely awful. You can DM me if you need to talk

gravyandbutter · 06/03/2022 21:36

Did anyone have a biopsy taken ? During my colposcopy the person doing said I don't have cancer (when I asked). I was initially referred for cell changes. What is the purpose of the biopsy ? I wish I had asked at the time

sammie1306 · 13/03/2022 10:03

I was told I had HPV back in 2018 and got myself so upset with worry I almost made myself ill, back then I think it was relatively new to the programme and people weren’t very well informed (it’s much better now I must add!) and was then put on yearly smears. In 2019, was told HPV was still present and again in 2020 but also showed low grade cell changes! Ffs… I was on the verge of planning my own funeral at this point. Sheer devastation.

I was absolutely inconsolable and the thought of waiting 6 weeks for a colposcopy almost tipped me over the edge - so I went private and was seen with the week by this amazing consultant, he was also a cancer surgeon and specialized in robotics (so I felt he would know his stuff!)

Anyway, I went to the colposcopy (absolutely scared to death) and he did his “thing” and it wasn’t painful at all, just a little uncomfortable. He said he thought it was CIN 1 / 2 - but to be sure he took 3 biopsies and reassured me it WAS NOT cancer (which was music to my ears). The biopsies took a week to come back, and I was still a nervous wreck and was like a cat on hot bricks the day I was getting the results.

Anyway, he rang me up on the day, and told me that the biopsies had actually come back all clear, and there was no abnormalities whatsoever and it was purely just viral - well, I could have cried. The relief was absolutely like nothing I’ve ever known in my life.

He said I could go back to 3 yearly smears, which I actually declined and said I wanted another one next year just to be safe, which he said was absolutely fine.

So girls, I just wanted to add this on as most of the time these things are absolutely nothing to worry and the testing is so detailed that it picks up absolutely everything that is going on down there, and even the best surgeons in the world can sometimes be mistaken :)

So I wish you all the best of luck and make sure you keep going for them smears - as it’ll always be alright on the night xx

Hi guys, hope all is well. Had my colposcopy yesterday. Took 2 biopsies and said results would take 4-6 weeks. He said he could see some shading but to be honest he was quite rude and not very forthcoming. I was sobbing for no reason other than I'm a major worrier.
Hopefully not take too long for results and I can put all this behind me. X

Got results back and they where of a higher grade than smear, going for the loop treatment thing and glad to put an end to this awful awful ordeal, I think it’s cost me my marriage as I’ve realised my husband is quite an unsupportive assh0le!

Hi OP I found your post a couple of days ago as I'm currently in a similar situation.

I'm sorry to hear your colposcopy doctor wasn't polite and also that your husband hasn't been supportive. You deserve better and I hope you're taking the best care of yourself.

I received my letter Thursday just gone with the results of my smear which was the same as your smear result (low grade changes and HPV). I didn't expect that and was quite down of course. I actually got in for the colposcopy the next day (yesterday!) But only because I called up and asked to be put on the cancellation list (as I'm such a worrier and there's no way I'd do well waiting for the original appointment which was early July) and they happened to have a cancellation for that afternoon. Fortunately my colposcopy was fine and the HCPs there were lovely. The woman doing my colposcopy took a biopsy and said like yours the results will take 4-6 weeks. I feel like I've been putting on a brave face since I got the letter and last night when I got home I did have a cry. It's totally normal to be shaken by this sort of thing though, I think it's probably mostly the shock because when you look at the statistics it's not actually that bad at all. However part of me is genuinely worried to be in this position as I'm 30 and haven't had any children yet which I was hoping to do.

I hope your treatment brings you the peace of mind you need, all the best with it OP and please take good care of yourself throughout.
