Recurrent Thrush & Group B Step

Hello,

I’m at my wits end with this and I do not know what else to do! Any advice is welcome - I’m desperate!!!

Back in June 2021 (I had a baby in August 2020) I went to the doctors with concerns over unusual discharge and irregular bleeding as well as feeling a bit run down. My smear is up to date. Dr had a look at my cervix and was quite happy that it was unlikely to be anything to do with that. I had swabs taken and I was told I had Thrush & Group B Strep. Was given 2 lots of antibiotics - one for Thrush and one for Group B strep. It seemed to clear up Group B strep and bleeding became regular again, but thrush didn’t get any better. So long story short I kept going back to DR with thrush symptoms and getting more antibiotics but they just didn’t seem to help. I got swabs redone December 2021 and still the same - positive for Thrush and Group B Strep. I was given more antibiotics to clear up Group B strep and 6 month antibiotics for thrush.
I have noticed no difference in thrush symptoms - still itchy & irritated. I have tried yoghurt, coconut oil, probiotics (including actimel), thrown out all of my underwear and bought cotton ones, ironing my underwear, no perfumed soap/body wash, no baths.

Is there anything else anyone would suggest trying or do I need to push back to the doctor to investigate this further?
Also is there anyone that also has Group B Strep and experiences symptoms every now and again?

Oh and I have also been taking spilanthes drops for about a week and a half but no difference. Don’t know if it’s too early to tell?

Hi similar sort of issues for the last two years. Lots of irregular bleeding.

The gynaecologist told me my swabs showed thrush and group b strep too. But never associated it with the bleeding. And didn’t give me anything to treat the strep b. But was put on a course of treatment for the thrush for 6 months which I don’t think has made much of a difference.

Can strep b cause bleeding and issues like this?

I can’t go in the bath or swimming as I get thrush from that too. Bought cotton pants too and don’t use any fragranced fabric softeners etc and have to be really careful. It’s rubbish.

Has your partner also had treatment at the same time as you? Even if they asymptomatic they could be reinfecting you.

I have reoccurring thrush. In both of my pregnancies I was treating myself almost weekly for it. Between my pregnancies I had the 6 months treatment for thrush and I also had group b strep too. Since having my youngest I really battled with breastfeeding thrush and again had the 6 month treatment. Everything seemed ok I til this last week when I started to feel like I had thrush again (downstairs thrush!). The go wouldn't give me oral treatment as I'm still breast feeding (despite having it in the last) but did perscribe me a weeks worth of pessaries to take every night but I've had to stop now as my period has arrived (ten days late).
I have an app next week but I think I know why the trigger for my thrush is and I honestly think it's hormonal. I always feel a bit uncomfortable before my period but the big thrush waves I've had have been around pregnancy, breast feeding and this month when my period was late.
It's absolutely horrendous though isn't it. I have all the sympathy on the world for you. I don't know the answer but if it's not getting better you need to keep going back and try and think what might be triggering it for you to see if you can eliminate anything!

I always understood that taking antibiotics can make you more susceptible to thrush, because it kills the good bacteria that keep the fungus that causes thrush at bay. So whenever I have to take strong antibiotics I tend to take an oral thrush tablet after I've finished the treatment.
So I don't really understand why you are having both treated simultaneously. It sounds like the one would cancel the other out. Anyone know more about this?

Hi how are you getting on now? I’ve just been told the strep B is there still and I have to go to back to a doctor for treatment. Still having symptoms xxx
