Daughter 15 feels sick at beginning of period

My daughter is 15 and feels really sick a couple of days before her period & then for at least another 2 days. She gets overheated & very stressed though no cramps or other physical symptoms. The nurse at our practice suggested Rescue remedy, Evening primrose oil, B6 and ginger (tea, biscuits, herbal tea) and avoiding overeating and fatty foods. None of these seem to help though we are currently trying ginger juice with soda water. Any suggestions please? She has missed school over this which is not something I want to encourage as we need to find a way to manage it. She is in a right state today as she's back to school tomorrow. Thank you.

Do you know why she gets herself so stressed, that would make her feel sick with anxiety . Does she get pains or is worried about accidents. If the doctor can rule out any medical cause like hormones then would she try meditation, yoga, lavender baths.

I’d find out if you have a local acupuncturist who specialises in female health.

Acupuncture has a proven track record with this and can help significantly with cramps, flow, regularity, length of periods and all sorts of feeling sick including periods and pregnancy.

Your daughters hormones are probably just a bit out of whack and a tweak could help her feel like a new person.

It costs £50-£60 where I am and I had to go twice a month, beginning and end of period, to get mine sorted, for a few months but it set me right up and changed my life.

My other option was contraceptive pills but I didn’t fancy the hormones. Hence I chose a natural alternative.

Thanks. I honestly think it's the sickness that makes her anxious, not the other way round. She manages her periods pretty well and does not seem to worry about accidents and has never, to my knowledge, had an embarrassing situation at school. Even when she is on holiday she feels very sick. But what is happening now is that the anticipation increases her anxiety and probably makes the sickness worse. We'll look into meditation and calming the anxiety.

Poor girl, feeling sick is the worse. Would tablets like Kalms help, would her doctor prescribe an anti sickness tablet.

Might try Kalms thanks. I'm thinking.g next stage needs to be some anti sickness meds. We tried an over the counter travel sickness pill which didn't help.

Try promethazine for the nausea

bigbeatmanifesto · 05/01/2022 16:08

I get this an am anaemic, she might need gentle iron, does her period also end with headache?
I started off by taking gentle iron and noticed a massive difference upped my iron intake and now the sickness & headaches have stopped completely after about 6 months.

itsgettingweird · 05/01/2022 16:10

I get this.

What I found was my bowel health slowed and it was gas and reflux. Gaviscon helped me.

pingster · 05/01/2022 16:19

My 15yo daughter has this too - she's currently wiped out in bed feeling really sick. We've got an appointment with the Gp in a couple of weeks so am hoping they'll be able to suggest something. She literally spends 2 weeks out of every month feeling ill either in the run up to her period or recovering from it.

Gaviscon is definitely worth a try, thanks.

She doesn't really get a headache. I have this problem and find I get very lightheaded if I don't take iron, but I'm not sure its the issue for her.

Poor thing! Two weeks is too long to suffer every month. It would be good if you could report back. I'll let you know what our doctor says too.

Has she been tested for pcos and thyroid issues. I get nausea during my period and have always had it, since I was 9, - since discovered it’s a fairly common symptom of low or high blood sugar levels.

Avarua · 05/01/2022 17:25

I second acupuncture! It sounds woo but it works. Also great with menopause/perimenopause.

pingster · 05/01/2022 20:33

I'll let you know what the Gp suggests. Will also look into acupuncture and some of the other suggestions on this thread

SharonEllis · 06/01/2022 08:49

Thanks everyone. Will look into pcos/thyroid. I have pcos so its possible though I never had the same issues. I sent her off to school this morning but she's back home already. I'm pretty tough with her so she knows she can't use this to get out of school, but given she had double art today, which she loves, I think she's genuine. Our poor teenage girls - what they have to go through....

My dd gets this too. Exhausted and sick every period. She misses school every month. Contraceptive pill wasnt good for her mental health though.im.gonna look into acupuncture though, so thanks

Elieza · 06/01/2022 11:57

For those considering acupuncture, there is only one professional body they have to be a member of, the bacc.

You can look the person up on their site to make sure.

Shop around to find one who has done post grad work on womens reproductive health. I’d travel further if I found one with a good track record and qualifications. You can hopefully speak with them prior on the phone too to make sure they know what they are talking about.

Like all qualified people you get good plumbers and bad ones, good hairdressers and bad ones, the qualifications may help work out who is better than who, but experience in the part of the body you’re there about is really important too.

When I was younger I had awful abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting on day 1 of my period to the extent that I was admitted to hospital twice. One thing that helped was Feroglobin liquid, I would take it from a week before my period started and it also seemed to help with the premenstrual symptoms. Dd1 also suffers with nausea and says it helps too. She takes the Plus version. An anti-nausea medication like ondansetron or one of the antihistamines that help nausea such as promethazine, cinnarazine or prochlorperazine might help too, although those can make you a bit drowsy.

pingster · 18/01/2022 14:59

Just coming back with a quick update. The GP has suggested she tries going on the mini pill (can't have combined pill due to migraine with aura) which she hopes will stop the symptoms as she won't have periods. She's going to give that a go for 3 months and then go back if not helping or if she doesn't get on with the pill.

rainbowninja · 21/01/2022 11:57

Hi, hope your daughter is getting on ok OP.

I would definitely recommend looking at your daughters diet, balancing blood sugar is really important for maintaining hormonal balance.
