Blood with Bowel Movements

I've had spots of blood when I've wiped myself after having bowel movements for sometime.

Today there was quite a bit more blood so I am hoping to get a GP appointment next week.

I am absolutely dreading this. I know it will be embarrassing and unpleasant.

Anybody have any advice or been through this? Thanks

Sorry to hear this but it could be a number of things. First things the Gp will want to rule out is cancer/infections so they will ask you for separate stool samples and should do a blood test. They may suggest you have a colonoscopy and ct scan also and they may do this on the two week pathway which will hopefully mean they can rule out anything serious quickly. Try not to worry.

I had this.
So much blood that the toilet bowl was so bright red I couldn’t even see the bottom of the toilet.

Dr examined me -finger up the bum Blush and pressed on my tummy. I had to fill in a questionnaire and was referred to colorectal.
I was examined again and a stool sample was requested. I was then put on a waiting list for a colonoscopy which took 14 months with me constantly bleeding every time I went to the loo.

The outcome was that there was no issue they could see and they prescribed stool softeners (despite me never having any issues going to the loo!) but clearly the actual cause was stools scratching me internally as the issue is totally resolved with the softeners.

Thanks for your replies.

@SoSickOfItNow - oh no sorry you've gone through this. At least there was no serious issue.

Is a colonoscopy painful?

Could it be a fissure? I have had these a few times.

Doctor has definitely seen it all before so try not to worry too much.

Could be piles if its on the paper?
I have diverticular disease and the blood is in the stools.

This happened to me too, saw GP who did a digital exam but couldn't feel anything. She reassured me but referred me on the 2 week pathway due to my age( 50) . I had a colonoscopy within 8 days which was reported as normal and was told probably caused by piles, increase fibre/ take stool softeners/ drink loads of water. Happens from time to time when I am a little constipated but anusol suppositories help a lot. Absolute relief when told no sinister cause.

Yes, I did consider that. I am taking medication which comprises of a laxative so I am wondering if that is effecting the stools and that's causing the bleeding.

Too much info - sorry if you are eating.
