Iron deficient and periods

I'm wanting to know if anyone else experiences this as google isn't much help and I feel I'm getting no where with my doctors. I'm iron deficient and take folic acid to make up for iron loss as prescribed by doctor. I do have normal periods once a month which are painful, heavy and lose blood clots which I have been prescribed blood thinners for before but even with the folic acid I seem be spotting in-between periods which can be small amounts or turn into a full monthly. I'm wanting to know if this is normal or if anyone else has experienced this that may help guide me into a solution as to why I seem to bleed most days with a few in-between that I don't. Do I need to take more vitamin C/folic acid/iron whether through fruit/veg or even vitamins or is there any other ways to improve my health as I feel drained and low all the time. Just to add I've only been like this since giving birth over 3 years ago, many thanks

Do not spend another three years like this.

Period bleeds like described is not normal at all and the cause needs to be properly determined. Blood tests should also be done to check your thyroid function.

You need the GP to refer you to a gynaecologist for further evaluation and I would be wondering why this has not been done to date. This sort of problem as well is outside a GPs remit and what has been prescribed to date, particularly blood thinners, has not worked. If finances allow I would actually try and see a gynae as a private patient for an initial consultation.

In the meantime I would suggest you keep a daily pain and symptom diary (if you do not already do this) as this can give the gynae clues.

Definitely document what's going on. This is not normal. If you have an iron deficiency then you need to take chelated iron supplements.

You need to go back to the doctors and ask them to investigate your heavy periods.

I had similar OP after having my DC. I was sent for an ultrasound to investigate. They couldn't find any issues, so put me on medication to stop my periods for 12 months to get my iron levels back up. You need to go back and push at the doctors to be taken seriously.
