4 months off pill and no sign of period

Hello,

I came off the pill in August and have been having a pretty rubbish time ever since.

I haven't had a period at all since quitting the pill which is now over 4 months. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced similar?

Ever since I came off I feel like crap all the time, really tired, moody and sad. Plus to top it all now my skin has exploded and I have painful acne on my forehead, chin and on my scalp.

I'm worried I may have PCOS but worry about wasting a doctor's time and wonder if I should just wait it out...

Anyone experienced anything similar? Feeling a little lost with it all really...

Have you ruled out pregnancy?

JenJen1408 · 08/12/2021 15:03

@SawdustandHay Yep, have done a few tests over the past few weeks and all are negative

I came off the pill a couple of years ago. It took a full 6 months for periods to come back, but since then they have been regular which I’m pleased about as I have PCOS

AlbertBridge · 08/12/2021 15:07

How old are you? Those symptoms are quite perimenopausey but that's probably just because they're hormonal.

Which pill was it, combined or mini?

JenJen1408 · 08/12/2021 15:09

@SpiritInTheNight Wow 6 months! Glad you're doing better now.

Did you have any other issues in those 6 months if you don't mind me asking? acne, tiredness etc?

@AlbertBridge I've just turned 30 and was on the combined pill (Yasmin) for 12 years, I had to come off due to migraines but also because we're hoping to start a family in the next year or two

Dd had this, took 5 months.

Labellex · 08/12/2021 15:25

Took me a whole year to see a period after stopping the pill and took two years for them to regulate! I found out I have pcos.

JenJen1408 · 08/12/2021 15:28

@Labellex Oh gosh, sorry to hear this! Did you see Doc about it? I don't really know much about how they confirm PCOS so weighing up if I should give them a call...

So I just wanted to update if anyone is reading this wondering like me if they're mad and being a hypochondriac.

Last Friday I finally got diagnosed with PCOS, which without the pill to manage it has been an absolute nightmare. It's had a severe impact on my mental and physical health. I have come incredibly close to losing my job and also feeling often like I do not want to continue my life.my life as I often felt like I didnt want to continue living like this.

I had a huge host of symptoms but felt like my gp didn't listen at all even when i told them i don't want to live anymore. It was only a gynecologist that listened, investigated and did a scan.

You know your own body and mind and you know if something is wrong.

Unfortunately the doctors never tell a woman that periods can take months or even years to return once she stops contraception.

ConfusedAhhh · 14/12/2021 22:05

@JenJen1408 what symptoms do you have? My period took a year to come back after I stopped taking the pill (on it 4 years). My periods are still irregular 2 years on.

Jinglebellsoncake · 14/12/2021 22:29

Could it be anything to do with the vaccine? When/did you have it?

VioletRose91 · 14/12/2021 23:52

@JenJen1408 I’m so sorry it can be quite a shock to find out you have it but it really is very common! Only thing I will say is it’s so hard to maintain your weight off the pill! A lot of us with pcos are insulin resistant so try to avoid sugar as much as possible! sending hugs x

You may find Verity's website helpful :-

Not all PCOSers are insulin resistant which is another conumdrum and there is still much about PCOS that is not fully understood even now. The causes of this are still not fully understood.

IsabelHerna · 19/12/2021 19:38

It's a very common problem, I was on Yasminelle and I needed months for my cycles to return. Then I tried Mirena coil and after I removed that, my period needed some months to return to normal too. I would wait a few more months before heading to the doctor.

Mushrooms0up · 19/12/2021 19:41

This was exactly me. I went without a period from august to November post pill and have pcos.

Doctors not helpful but I really recommend following some pcos accounts on instagram.

I’ve been taking spearmint tea and inositol and I feel SO much better, it’s like a brain fog has been lifted.
