Very watery discharge

A bit of background: I’m in my mid-40s and had the Mirena inserted in April straight after surgery for fibroid and endo removal. For the past month, I have been having very watery discharge, and it feels like flooding; no sign of mucus like normal discharge.
Today, I used a tampon as I had a long day out. When I got home, my knickers were a bit wet and the tampon was totally drenched. I wasn’t expecting fluid to leak from the tampon. Anyone know what this is?
I don’t have itchiness and it doesn’t smell (I don’t reckon it’s thrush); definitely not an STI as I haven’t had sex in yonks.

Could you have left a tampon in previously? It would have absorbed water (from the bath, etc) while it's been there and this can leak out. Happened to a friend

I had this during perimenopause. Put down to hormones but never felt like a totally satisfactory diagnosis.

Very rarely use tampons. This is the first time in months.

I’ll get myself checked. Seems like quite a sudden change given I had the Mirena in 9 months ago.

A watery discharge can be a sign of vaginal atrophy or VA (also now called GSM), caused by lower estrogen levels. Look it up. At least 50% of women experience VA, and it is often missed/undiagnosed in the perimenopausal years. A prescription from your doctor for Ovestin cream or Vagifem would help if that is the case. Worth investigating.

That’s very helpful. Thank you. I have googled my symptoms and didn’t come across VA. Will ask gynae to investigate.

I had this with polyps at the entrance to my cervix

Had the polyps removed…problem solved overnight

Milomonster · 05/12/2021 23:51

Thanks anyfucker. Did you have any other symptoms?

I’ve had a Mirena coil put in this year and have intermittently had the same watery discharge,so reading with interest.

Yes, post menopausal bleeding

I had a hysteroscopy to check for endometrial cancer and the polyps were discovered and treated incidentally

Polyps can “weep” a thin watery fluid. It used to make me red raw with soreness and I have lost count of the tests and treatments I had thinking it was recurrent thrush or BV

Yes, exactly -- because it's not just as if you're wearing sanitary towels for five or so days for a period, you need to wear them all the time, and it can make you sore.
