Boric acid for Thrush.

Anyone had any success with boric acid pessaries for Candida Galbrata?

Quick history: Obviously something wrong with my vagina/ vulva (sore, mainly) so gynae swabbed and tested me for everything and I came back positive for this. She wanted to try me on the flucanozole first but a double dose three days apart didn’t get rid of it and now she is on vacation for a fortnight so I can’t see her for further advice.

I did get a repeat prescription for the flucanozole-is that worth another try before I go on the boric acid? I know flucanozole has limited results with galbrata but it does work for some people and it did feel like it was almost gone from the two tablets, just not quite.

I’m sure it’s fine but I’m not entirely comfortable sticking something with “acid” in the name up my fanny. Can anyone give me their experience?

I use organic apple cider vinegar for thrush. Orally and on a tampon. It works for me, balances everything out. Works pretty much overnight. No medicine required.

But I'm not familiar with the candida condition you mentioned and am not a doctor so...

TannyFickler · 17/11/2021 21:03

You need econazole pessaries for that strain.

Sounds something maybe I could benefit from? As I get re occurring thrush.
Currently using pessaries every week to keep it at bay (maintenance treatment prescribed by Dr)

Have you been swabbed to see which strain of thrush you have, @OooohAhhhh ?

Which pessaries are you using?

Happy to try anything at this point. Does is sting when you insert the tampon and how long do you leave it in for? Also how much to take orally? Thanks in advance for answering this. I’m so grateful

Thank you. I can’t actually read this as am outside the UK but it has given me something to google

@Chenga yes I have, they said it was just normal thrush and didn't say anything else. I use the clotrimazole, but not the canesten brand, just the one in the white/green pack.
They won't refer me to gynae either until we see if the treatment gets rid of it.

Chenga · 18/11/2021 14:03

Thank you @OooohAhhhh. Are the weekly pessaries working? Hope it clears up for you soon. It’s so miserable, isn’t it?

Re: apple cider vinegar. About two tablespoons orally for a few days. And yes, it stings a bit when you use it on a tampon or as a douche. All part of the lovely fun of being a woman.

Also, with thrush it can help to reduce yeast, bread and sugar in your diet. These things encourage Candida to grow: they literally feed thrush.

Have you tried probiotics? I've just had an extended course of antibiotics & have had side effects of thrush & gastro symptoms, I took the fluconazole capsule & am taking probiotic capsules every day as well, I take Bio-Kult Candeo capsules twice a day.

rj11 · 29/12/2021 15:35

@Chenga did you try them? Or anything that helped?

OooohAhhhh · 29/12/2021 16:10

@Chenga mine has mysteriously disappeared now, after suffering with it since pregnancy! (For 3 years). Not had it for 2 months! Didn't change anything except I used the pessaries for a few weeks every week. Hopefully that's the end of it.

rj11 · 29/12/2021 16:55

@OooohAhhhh was yours glabrata and were you using the boric acid pessaries?

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 29/12/2021 17:09

I’ve used boric acid for bv (after trying everything, and I mean everything else) and it was extremely effective. It’s also helped with thrush on the odd occasion that I’ve had thrush.
I bought food grade boric acid on amazon and also some vegetarian empty capsules and a jar of pure coconut oil. Make up the capsules yourself using 2/3 boric acid and 1/3 coconut oil. The coconut oil will prevent bleeding/spotting that you might get if you use boric acid alone.
Insert deep into the vagina and wear a pantyliner as you will get a hush of watery discharge some hours after inserting a capsule.
I can’t remember how often I used it but daily or twice daily for five to seven days springs to mind.

OooohAhhhh · 29/12/2021 17:53

@rj11 no idea what strain mine was. The swab at the doctors just showed normal thrush I think. But it plagued me for 3 years. Weekly at least. Sometimes twice in 1 week. I think pregnancy set mine off. I was put on a maintenance treatment (clotrimazole pessaries) just like the ones you get in a normal canesten pessary kit. Took them for around 3 months and it's just gone. I've ran out now, but don't think I need anymore. I never used them for the full 6 months.
