I have had laparoscopic type surgery and I must say I almost fell off my chair in shock when it was suggested to me. Like you I was scared about the op and the GA (that in particular) but in my case the fear was far worse than the reality. Its a keyhole surgery op so any scarring is minimal; I was left with three tiny incisions which healed very quickly. All the staff were nice and looked after me with due care before before and after surgery in the recovery room.

Would ensure that you are not told any amount of great detail about the lap op findings whilst you are in the recovery room; it is poor practice on the part of the hospital if they do that. What you also need ideally is a follow up appointment a week or so later to properly discuss this. I was a day case and so went home that evening after having something to eat and being able to use the toilet without problems.

At that time I was advised to have two days off work post procedure.

I wish you the best of luck with the lap; any other questions just ask.

I agree with pp the fear is worse than reality. I was in ward on my own waiting for my op and I was terrified. 2 lovely nurses took me down and I told them I was very nervous and they talked me through everything and thats all I remember on that. I was then taken to recovery and told of Any findings once I was able to understand. I was a little sore for the first 2 days then I was absolutely fine and only very tiny scars to show can't see them unless you really look. You'll be absolutely fine op. Good luck.

I had one a few years ago. Positive is it eased my symptoms, I had awful periods and chronic abdo pain, both improved following my surgery. It’s gradually getting worse now but I’ve had 4 years with minimal symptoms.

Do tell the anaesthetist you’re nervous about the anaesthetic. They will be lovely and reassuring. Complications and problems with the anaesthetic are actually very rare these days and hopefully the anaesthetist should put you at ease. I honestly felt like I went to sleep one second then they woke me up! I was a bit sore after wards but my pain was easily managed. I was post op sore for about a week but felt okay. I would also say wear baggy trousers. I wore jeans and I couldn’t do them up afterwards due to the bloating Grin Good luck, I hope it helps you.

Also had a laparoscopy a few years back. The procedure itself was fine and relatively pain free. What I found difficult was looking pregnant for a few days after due to the bloating when I was having the lap for fertility issues.
