Mirena - is the normal? When do I contact the GP?

I got the mirena coil put in two weeks ago. I had about three days of spotting and no pain, then the bleeding started getting heavier and pain started. Two weeks on I’m still bleeding, like a normal (heavy ish but not flooding) period. The pain varies between normal period cramps and full on contractions.

Do I just need to wait it out or should I contact the GP?

I'm now on number 5 Mirena, and mine have always taken around 3 to 6 months to settle. This current one took a bit longer.

Rainbows321 · 29/09/2021 12:46

The bleeding is normal. It can take months to settle down. Do you know when you were due on a period?

The pain can be normal but have you checked if you can feel the treads? Just wondering if it has moved and that’s causing the pain.

Sounds familiar to me and sadly mine never got any better! The irony is that I had mine to supposedly help with heavy bleeding and it made it worse.

amusedtodeath1 · 29/09/2021 13:09

I've had four so far first three no pain after first 24 hours no bleeding at all. The last one some bleeding and pain on and off for a month.

Do you have a follow up appointment to check it's in place properly? Can you feel the strings.

If you are concerned I'd call your GP/Clinic/Gyno and explain your concerns.

I bled heavily for 3 months then spotted for another two and was on the verge of having it removed - then overnight the bleeding stopped and never came back (8 years now)

CityGirlintheCountry · 29/09/2021 14:15

I had mine in for 3+ years (currently 6m preggo) but recall having non-stop period cramps for almost a month? Not much bleeding, but literally 24/7 cramps for a month. Almost went back to remove it, then like PPs have said, it suddenly stopped, and I kinda forgot I had it, excep when I went on beach hols and could smugly NOT have to plan around my period. Bliss! Definitely getting it again after le bebe is out.

@Sarah2384 Might be a stupid question, but I thought the Mirena was only meant to be used for 5 years, and then replaced? Is there one you can keep for longer?
BigButtons · 29/09/2021 14:21

I started off spotting with mine then the bleeding for heavier and heavier and the pain was in unbearable.
Went to get it removed after 2 months but the threads had migrated into my womb. I had to go to hospital to get it removed. I then went on to develop an infection and couldn’t even walk.
It was a horrendous experience.
I have subsequently learnt now that I’m on HRT that me and progesterone and I are not good friends.

Thanks all! Good to know that it’s not totally abnormal.

They said they don’t do follow up appointments but I’ve checked and I can feel the strings. Period as normal would have been due two days ago so that’s probably contributing to it too.

At least the bleeding is slightly less bad than my usual horrific flooding, even though it feels like it might never end!

@CityGirlintheCountry - I'm on to my second one now. I had abdominal and hip / groin pain for a while after first insertion but didn't have any adverse symptoms after second insertion
