Hysteroscopy

Anyone had a hysteroscopy to remove a polyp? I had a chemical miscarriage and then I went to get an internal ultrasound and the lady said I have a polyp which may have caused me to miscarry?? She told me I should have it removed. I'm so confused and terrified. Has anyone had poylp removed? Did it hurt? How long did it it take and can it be done under local anesthetic??

TIA!!

I had this done a couple of weeks ago . It was seen on ultrasound and then I got an appointment to see a consultant. They do it under local anaesthetic. I'd say it was very uncomfortable rather than painful . They did offer me gas and air which I didn't have. The whole procedure took about 20 mins or so and I had a little bit of bleeding afterwards which didn't last long . You can also watch the polyp being sucked out, on the screen if you want to .

I should just add that they didn't remove it at the first appointment. They used the camera to assess the position and size of it and then I went back about 4 weeks later to actually have it removed .

Some women find a hysteroscope very painful, some don’t. You can have it done under general anaesthetic. This is the advice from the RCOG: www.rcog.org.uk/en/patients/patient-leaflets/outpatient-hysteroscopy/

I had it done earlier this year, it was uncomfortable but not too painful, I had a lovely nurse who kept talking too me throughout the procedure and reassured me. I was worried about the GA but it wasn’t how I thought it would be (not painful). Make sure you have someone to drive you home after, I stupidly drove myself and felt dizzy afterwards so ended up sitting in McDonald’s for a hour before driving back.

I’ve got to have the same procedure in a couple of weeks; I’m terrified too. I had a colposcopy with a womb biopsy in the summer age that wasn’t too bad, so I’m hoping it won’t be too much worse.

I have had three but the buggers keep growing back. I had the third last Monday and this time they used a machine called a Myosure and I watched them being shaved away on the screen, it was quite fascinating. I have had all of the hysteroscopies under a local and they have been fine. I felt a little bit light headed when they injected the anaesthetic into my cervix but apart from that it was ok, the team of nurses were wonderful. It really didn’t hurt. They asked me my pain on a scale of 1-10 and I honestly said a 2. And I suffer from awful anxiety and panic attacks but have got through all 3 ok.

GorgeousGoldies · 25/09/2021 20:28

Thanks @Thedishwasherstackerthays that’s reassuring - sorry to hear yours keep coming back though, I believe that’s quite unusual.

@Xxrzx I hope that it goes well for you x

Which is the one where they inject dye in you to view your uterus? If it's like that I'd take all the drugs on offer. They said it would be like period cramps. They lied.

Yankee63 · 25/09/2021 20:46

When I had mine they tried under local but couldn’t get far enough

Whilst sat outside waiting for dp I could feel pains starting, by the time I got to the car park I was literally double over in stomach cramps .
I was in agony I think I was going to pass out.
I do have a low pain threshold thou !

I’d advise 20 mins before procedure take
2 ibuprofen just in case you start cramping after

Thank you so much for your reply, I feel a bit less terrified. I definitely don't want to see it on the screen!

Oh yes, forgot to say that I did take pain killers an hour before the procedure.

Reading this made me feel a lot better and calmer. I also understand it a bit more. Thank you!

Thanks for letting me know! I will get my partner to drive me :)

I've had 3 over last 6 months for polyps and other suspected problems. All turned out ok. GAs all and absolutely no pain after, didn't even need paracetamol. Best of luck

Thank you for replying, I honestly thought no one on here would reply! Thanks for the reassurance regarding it being done under local - were the injections very painful? I also have awful anxiety attacks with anything to do with needles etc...

Xxrzx the injections are very much like a dental injection, quite stinging initially but over very quickly.

I didn’t find them to be like that at all. I hate dental injections and they always hurt.

I was really anxious as I had a traumatic birth with dd and needed numbing for stitches which was very painful (like being stung in the food by a wasp), so when they said I would need local for this I panicked. The area where they inject does not have much feeling in it at all (not like your mouth and not like your vulva), I hardly felt anything at all and wasn’t at all painful. I had biopsy’s taken which was slightly uncomfortable, but the only pain I got was similar to strong period cramps and that was after they had been in there a while.
