Hi! I am after some advice (well hoping for reassurance 😢)
I received a abnormal smear result a few days ago (no other details. I've seen some people post there's have been labelled as different types)
I've got a colonoscopy a week Tuesday but so worried.
I've contacted my Gp for more details but the receptionist said they couldn't ring me back until the 24 😳.
Thanks for reading x

Try not to stress too much 😊 I had an abnormal smear a couple of years ago and had to have a colposcopy. They gave me adrenaline (can't remember why they needed to do this but I think it's standard) and anaesthetic then used this hot loop thing to take the abnormal cells. How much they have to take depends on how wide spread the abnormal cells are. It's was unpleasant but not too bad 👍 then about 6 months later I had the follow up smear and all was fine. If obviously a worrying thing but try not to worry too much, and ask any questions when you see them. Good luck with it x

Thank you for your reply! Did they do the treatment on your first visit? x

I think so 🤔 sorry I haven't got the best memory! I'm pretty sure I got the letter telling me I had abnormal cells and giving me the date of the colposcopy and that was the only time I saw them (for the colposcopy) until I had the follow up smear 6 months later.

Try not to worry too much. I had a colposcopy 2 weeks ago and had 2 punch biopsies taken(currently waiting for the results). It was uncomfortable but they were amazing, I had a consultant doing the biopsy, a nurse who was there just to talk to be and reassure me during the procedure and a student. They were all lovely and talked me through everything.

Hi, I had a LLETZ today for CIN3.

Have had abnormal smears for years. Each year upgrading itself. Have had multiple colposcopies, a few biopsies.

Last year my smear was bank to Borderline changes.

This year in late July it was high grade dyskariosis and HPV.

Stress doesn't help HPV, in fact can make it worse, it's immune based after all so try not to stress. Easy to say, but you're in the system now.

I always find my smears really hurt. My colposcopy was the same, 5 August, the biopsy this time was so painful the consultant couldn't get the colposcope out of me I was that tense!

Got those results back late August, within 2 weeks I had a date for urgent LLETZ under general anaesthetic.

The procedure went well but I'm in cramping pain plus horrible anaesthetic side effects. Bleeding too.

They gave me a 48 hour dick note because of the GA, but told me I must rest and to ask my GP for a further note, which I'll be doing. No exercise, bedroom stuff or swimming for 4 weeks.

Results in around 2 weeks, when it's clear and 6 month smears, or further treatment.

Best of luck, you're in good hands x

Also, you will get a lot of people saying it doesn't hurt, and it might not for you, and those who say they're back at work the same day. Listen to your body and emotions s. Aside from pain/discomfort and bleeding, it's an emotionally draining and invasive experience I find, be kind to yourself.

Sick note not dick note, drugs man!

My mum had one years ago, said it was fine and went back to work same day.

I can't even cope with smears so would also feel anxious. Basically it's essential but the nurses will be amazing I imagine.

Hope you can talk to them soon and they can put you at ease a little bit.

Hope it goes ok OP.

Hi, I've just received a letter saying I need to have a colposcopy. I've got so many other health things going on that I'm Nora really stressed about it so just wondering how you got on with yours? x

Viviennemary · 22/10/2021 18:38

I had this a number of years ago. Was worried sick for over 18 months year. Tests and more tests. It all came to nothing. I didn't even need treatment. Try not to stress too much.
