Endometrial ablation.

I have an appointment with the local gyno team tomorrow to discuss my super heavy periods.

I've been asking for an ablation and have refused all hormonal 'treatments'. I tried the T acid tablets and while they help the bleeding the side effects are bad. I can only take them at night.

Luckily husbands health insurance will cover the operation privately so really I just need an open referral from them,

But in terms of the surgery in general, what should I ask? Do you think they'll be supportive? I've found all doctors so far just want to push hormones.

For context I'm 37 with 2 kids (boy and a girl as that seems to matter 🤷🏼‍♀️) and don't want any more.

It wasn't the answer for me OP, I had one. It failed and I ended up in constant pain, heavy bleeding (worse than ever) returned and I had to have a hysterectomy.

How alarming, @TheStatusQuo. Ive booked to have one soon, after a failed attempt to treat heavy bleeding with a D and C and a mirena coil (which I bled out). Was the pain pre-existing, or as a result of the procedure? It’s my last shot ahead of a hysterectomy which I’m keen to avoid.
TheStatusQuo · 31/08/2021 22:11

The pain was as a result of the failed ablation, not pre-existing.

Google failed ablation Pallas. I don't want to be alarmist but it is a thing.

It was my last shot too, but in hindsight I wish I had just plumped for the hysterectomy in the first place, one less surgery and much less pain!

I'm sorry it didn't work for you. My mum had it done and said it was the best thing ever to happen to her.

I'd rather not go for a hysterectomy, but I'm willing to risk it. The heavy bleeding is just taking over. Thankfully the serious pain has stopped since having kids.

So update. It seems that the consultant I was due to see has just not turned up. I'm sat here waiting to find out if anyone is going to see me.

I had to sort out special childcare to be here today ... I'm not happy

I had this operation performed as a private patient because I was getting nowhere with the NHS. I ended up self referring to the local private hospital.

In my case this type of surgery was successful and I have had no problems with heavy bleeding since. I have had painful periods in the past and that was due to endometriosis. The constant rise and fall of both estrogen and progesterone was causing such bleeding to arise in the first place.

LizziesTwin · 01/09/2021 11:59

That’s so disappointing. Grr

Twizbe · 01/09/2021 12:54

So I finally got seen by a very lovely doctor. She tried to talk me into the minera coil but when I said I would be private and just needed the referral for insurance she was less pushy.

She examined me and found something on my cervix which needs to be looked at first.

I had mine done privately- didn’t work. In fact 10 years later it’s impossible to tell on ultrasound that the operation took place. I was supposed to have it as a day case but was unable to go home because of low bp. I was supposed to have 3 days off work and ended up being off for three weeks. The pain was horrific, the post operative bleeding was horrific and it made no difference at all to my periods. I wish I’d had a hysterectomy and had done with it tbh.

Have you been investigated for fibroids already? They can often be the cause of heavy bleeding and if you’ve got them then ablation might not be suitable because they make your womb larger and “lumpy”.

Yeah no fibroids for me. My scans have always come back clear. Hormones are all fine, no PCOS, no endometriosis. Basically it seems to just be me :(

The thing on my cervix could be causing my spotting so they will check that first.
