Amitriptyline for breast pain

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 23/08/2021 23:52

has anyone taken it? Does it work?

I've had breat pain for 4 years, steadily getting worse. Just one side. I've had mammograms and scans, but nothing sinister found. I'm on hrt, which might have made it worse.

Ive now been prescribed amitriptyline.

I have taken it. Give it six weeks to work, gradually increasing the dose.

Good luck OP.

I take it, it’s brilliant, feel a bit hungover in the mornings but that doesn’t last long only for the first week or so. I have hip and leg pain and it really did make a difference. As pp said it takes a while to get in your system so give it a good few weeks before you decide it doesn’t work!
I have stomach problems so can’t take anti inflammatories or codeine. Amitriptilyne doesn’t cause me any problems . I take a small dose at night. I hope it works for you .

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/08/2021 12:00

I started taking it last night - hungover is a good description of the feeling today. I was also flapping about awake between 3am and 4am, but fast asleep still at 9am (this NEVER happens, I'm always awake by 6.30). Hopefully that wears off before I have to go back to work.

My mum took it for headaches, did a month, then stopped and the headaches have not come back. I'd love for this to work for me. Everything crossed.

I take it for nerve damage after c section. It has made such a difference in pain free! I am gradually reducing the dose to find that sweet spot.

Well, I'm a week in. I think it's working a bit - but I'm also wondering whether it's all psychosomatic. I went to the Dr this morning for a check of my boob, there definitely isn't anything sinister going on by feel, so that's a relief. She said that if it was still hurting in 3 weeks, then she'd suggest doubling the amitriptyline for 2 weeks, then if that doesn't work then she'll refer me to the breast clinic again.

Apparently they wouldn't see me unless I'd tried the higher dose of amitriptyline anyway.

Bodies are so annoying!

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot What dose are you currently taking?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 04/09/2021 00:27

@PricklesTheHedgehog

10mg a day. I've since been to the GP just to get her to check my boob for any issues. I just can't get past the 'how can it hurt this much but not be something sinister'. She didn't check it, just talked about potentially doubling the dose if it didn't stop hurting.

I've spoken to a work colleague who has taken 20mg a day for depression, which makes me worried that if I take the 20mg a day, then I'll need to taper to come off them.

I mean, what even is the long term outlook for this drug? I just want my boob to stop hurting, I don't want to be taking something that makes my mouth really dry and upsets my stomach for ever just to not have a hurting boob.

Amitriptyline was a miracle drug for me when I had terrible nerve pain which was caused by swelling from a DVT which was pressing on a nerve. I was given all kinds of serious pain relief and Amitriptyline was the only one that worked. It made the inflamed nerve less sensitive. I took it short term until the swelling went down which in turn reduced the pain.

The theory was that the swelling was causing the pain and the pain was causing the swelling. Amitriptyline broke the cycle.

PricklesTheHedgehog · 04/09/2021 11:12

10mg is a low dose. I take 30mg for long term pain which is also not especially high. I've tried to reduce to 20mg, but the pain returns each time.

I don't think it's prescribed for depression these days, only for pain.

Yes, when you want to stop it, you taper the dosage gradually.

10mg is the lowest available tablet, so unless you can successfully cut them in half (I can't), if you're on 10mg you just stop taking it.

Good luck OP.

I'm on 10mg for migraines and it worked fantastically well, but gave me terrible constipation. I stopped it and within three or so days I awoke with a migraine. I've just got to persevere, I think and buy shares in Lactulose

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 04/09/2021 11:49

Bodies are just so weird!! Aaagh.

I'm now wondering if it's going to stop other random pains I have - shoulder joint, sciatica etc.

OP posts:
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/09/2021 20:41

So, it worked for about 2 weeks - then 2 days ago I started having the stabby pains in the boob/underarm again. Nowhere near as bad as before, but definitely the pain is back.

Does its effectiveness reduce over time if you stay on the same dose? I've got enough to up the dose to 20mg, but am reluctant.

I think it depends on how big your boobs are as to how well it works..

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/09/2021 21:05

Oh, I'll be stuffed then! G cup. But it worked for a fortnight. Going to stay where I am with the dose for another 2 weeks, which will be around 7 weeks in, then decide what to do next.

BeaLola · 24/09/2021 22:07

I had it for sciatica along with some other meds - worked but I felt very spaced out and had the worst constipation ever

2020isoverthankgoodness · 24/09/2021 22:21

I read that you should take amitriptyline 10 hours before you want to wake up.

I've forgotten the exact term he used, but my GP said the effectiveness didn't decrease over time. Even if he's wrong 2 weeks doesn't sound very long for that to happen.

teaandpastries · 24/09/2021 22:49

Has anyone who has taken it suffered hair loss with amytriptyline?

Saladd0dger · 24/09/2021 22:54

I took it for severe pins and needles and bone pain in my legs. The only thing it done was mess with my head. I already had hair loss so can’t say in contributed. My husband made me stop taking it. He could not cope with me on it.

wishuponarainbow · 25/09/2021 00:31

Hi, I take 50mg a day for migraine prevention.
Worked up to this dose over 5wks, on Drs advice, starting with 10mg WK 1, 20mg WK 2 etc.
So far only 2, easily stopped, migraines. Try not to worry too much about the dose you're taking. I was worried initially but was told that if it's what's needed to help the pain and prevent debilitating symptoms then to go with it.
Hope this helps reassure a bit?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 25/09/2021 11:14

I feel super spaced out, my eyes ache and I've got a really dry mouth nearly all the time - I wondered if it was just tiredness from start of term/other life shit, but I think it's this drug.

It's really not sitting well with me in general, and isn't really stopping the pain. Better off just taking an ibuprofen really I think.

DJSteves · 25/09/2021 11:27

I have taken 10mg each night for two years. I have a slipped disk and sciatic nerve pain. Stops me having to take lots of painkillers. Does give me crazy dreams through! Grin
