UTI tips for easing symptoms?

JaneyHenderson · 14/08/2021 18:06

Awaiting 111 doctor to ring me back for prescription for a very uncomfortable UTI.
Any suggestions of what to do in the meantime? It hurts like a motherfucker.

Had paracetamol and a bath.

Feeling very sorry for myself 😩

Drink lots and lots and lots of water. Yea it's gonna make you pee a lot but I remember that's what made it less painful.

Bicarb in water

Cranberry juice

Original not low sugar

Fdksyihfd · 14/08/2021 22:24

Bicarbonate of soda in water helps with the pain (I normally do 1 tea spoon in a glass of water); cranberry juice only helps with preventing rather than when you actually have it.
Someone once told me that if it’s really painful then wee in the shower with water running but can’t say it’s something I’ve tried as bicarbonate has always helped until can get anti biotics

Drink loads and loads of water and pee as much as possible, I managed to get rid of most uti's without needing antibiotics

Like pp I used to get a lot of UTIs but found I could clear them by drinking as much as possible - usually 4 or 5 litres a day. Lemon barley is a good old fashioned help - apparently the barley helps a lot. Cranberry juice also supposed to help, but I was worse after acidic drinks - specially orange juice so I avoided that.

They say don't wear tights, and avoid overheating, but I was the opposite. A warm bath then tights on, off to bed under a duvet with a hot water bottle.

Best of luck

FreeSpirits · 14/08/2021 22:35

Hot water bottle, definitely eases the pain!

robotcollision · 14/08/2021 22:37

Loads and loads of diluted cranberry juice and cranberry tea. Stops it from burning.

abw94 · 14/08/2021 22:39

Lemon barley water and lots of it!
Also I now do this everyday after a chemist recommended, buy the aqueous cream from boots, it's a large white round tub, and use it as a wash downstairs everyday. I've not had one since I started doing this (touch wood!)

DosGardenia · 14/08/2021 22:46

I am prone to UTIs. Antibiotics is the only thing that cites them, but in the meantime I drink LOADS of water. Sometimes I’d just sit on the loo or in the bath gulping pints of water. Makes the pee less acidic and stingy.
And second Hot water bottle on my tummy.

mswales · 14/08/2021 22:49

Cystitis sachets from the chemist, Co codamol (stronger than paracetamol), loads of fluid and a hot water bottle between the legs. I suffered from many awful UTIs and this combo was the most helpful. I no longer do so there is light at the end of the tunnel if you are a persistent sufferer xx

cardy1969 · 14/08/2021 22:50

Try D Mannose. I've been plagued by many UTIs. This really helps me and is natural. Available from Amazon.

Limitedhelp · 14/08/2021 23:03

If 111 are not very helpful, You can probably get a private prescription done through Superdrug online prescription service.

Thanks everyone!
I ended up in the walk in at 8pm because
doc hadn't rung me back and I was in so much discomfort. Sat with hot water bottle for almost 2 hours. Was not fun.
Ended up with a mad dash to Tesco's pharmacy at 9:50pm because they shut at 10!
Woken up feeling better 👍🏻
Oh and GP rang as I was leaving chemist 🙄

Going to stock up on lemon barley and co-codamol today. We have a family party at 4pm (not hosting, thank god!) so will
use these excellent tips to make it through that!

I found ibuprofen with lysine better than paracetamol or normal ibuprofen. I don't know why by this was the only painkiller that took the edge off. Also definitely hot water bottles/heat pads.
