Bleeding with the coil

Bugsy73 · 29/07/2021 07:50

Had a coil fitted at the beginning of May, bled for about 7 weeks. This slowed down and stopped for about 2 weeks; started again and have now been bleeding for almost 3 weeks.
It's not heavy, slightly inconvenient and tiresome. Will it stop? I really want to persevere with the coil as my periods were getting out of control.
Has anyone had similar? Did it stop eventually?
Thanks.

In my experience, no!! Sorry. I had almost constant spotting, heavier periods than I had before (and it was fitted to try and resolve this) and terrible cramps. It bled itself out after a year!

I’m having one fitted soon.
The GP said that in her experience 50% have heavier periods and 50% have no periods.
She said I should put up with it for 3 months to allow it to settle, if I wasn’t happy she’d remove it.

I had the Mirena. Bled for 6 months then still had monthly bleeding 😭

Had it taken out after 18 months.

Darn it!! I am hoping that its still just early days and that it will eventually settle. I am absolutely ok with still having periods ( as long as manageable), just the constant bleeding, whilst light, is a bind!

Mine (mirena) was in for just over a year and never settled. I bled for a lot of that time and periods became even heavier (those being the issue it was put in to resolve). I was relieved when it was finally removed.

I have since seen a different consultant gynaecologist at a different hospital and been told that the size and position of a large fibroid means that I was in fact an unsuitable candidate for a coil of any sort and was the reason it didn't work.

It suits some people and not others. Decide what your time limit is for allowing it to settle. If by then you are not confident that it has then insist it is removed (be warned that doctors can be reluctant here).

I had a mirena coil fitted August last year. I bled/spotted til January and haven't bled since.

years ago OP but my experience was...

Mirena fitted in approx Jan .. bled heavily for months.. kept asking if this was normal.. kept being told by Health Centre yes normal it needs time to settle..

before I realised it .. 13 months had passed .. I saw a GP late one Friday night .. explained why I was there.. he was shocked.. He sent me to A&E to have it removed.. I got iron infusions every 4 weeks for a year to increase my depleted iron levels ..

my advice..

Get RID 🌸

This is the response I was hoping for FrenchyQ Grin. I'm willing it to settle, and happy to give it time. At the moment the constant light bleeding is preferable to monthly flooding.

I had a very similar experience with the implant, which I was told contains the same hormones as the merina coil, once my implant was fitted, the same week as my friends, I bled constantly and it never stopped! Gp put me on the pill on top of the implant to regulate my bleeding, that made it worse! My friend however never bled once for the 3 years she had it fitted and only began spotting at the 3 year mark when it was due to be removed. I got mine removed after a few months as the bleeding every single day obviously was not good lol. I did have cooper coil (until it randomly fell out last night) and that didn’t cause any issues, my periods stayed regular and it lasted 2.5 years until it fell out last night however my plan was to keep it for the 10 years it would last.

Thanks for posting this. I've had the Mirena coil in the past and had very light periods, not this constant bleeding - as you say, really inconvenient. I had this one fitted a few weeks ago and it's been almost constant - it followed a year of incredibly heavy periods, severe anaemia, passing out frequently. I have an ultrasound booked next week to rule out anything sinister. However your post has reassured me that this is more normal than I realised.

HowdyDudey · 05/08/2021 06:43

I’ve had it in for about 7 months now. Initially bled for 2 weeks. Not heavily but it was inconvenient. Has settled somewhat but I’m just so tired and I’m wondering if it is due to the coil. I think I would rather 4 days of fairly heavy bleeding to the drawn out light days I have.

MajorNeville · 05/08/2021 07:33

Copper coil, bled heavily every month for about 2 weeks.
Mirena coil, have very light periods every couple of months.
