Ovulation pain worse than period pain.

I’ve noticed in the past year or so that ovulation pain is actually worse than pain before and during my period. It starts a few days after my period and lasts a few days. I’m 34 and my youngest child is 20 months. I didn’t notice it before I had my little one. I’m wondering if it’s normal as you get older or could be endometriosis or something else? I don’t want to go on contraception if I don’t need to because I’m happily single and not having sex and my periods don’t bother me too much. Has this happened to anyone else? Bad stomach cramps and back ache and tiredness. Even some radiating pain to my private area.

I get really bad pains then too. My GP called it Mittelschmerz and prescribed pain killers. I also get the occasional ovarian cyst so get scans for those.

No advice I'm afraid but you have my sympathy! I have had similar ever since my cycle returned after the birth of my second child. Almost a week's worth of really debilitating pain.

I take the combined pill so I don't ovulate but really dislike taking it long term.

Please go see a GP. I ignored this for about 18 months and then discovered I had a cyst the size of a baby's head on my ovary! That was why ovulation was so damn painful.

I have awful ovulation pain. Truly awful, coupled with bloating and general discomfort. I’ve been seeing a private gynaecologist about it, had many investigations (scans, mri, hysteroscopy, blood tests…) and it doesn’t look like anything sinister, she is 99% sure it’s endometriosis, but won’t know for sure without laparoscopy, which she’s offered to do. I’ve decided to try the pill for 3 months, as I can’t have a laparoscopy right now due to it being summer hols and no childcare. I don’t really want to take hormones, but it’s worth a go, and if the side effects are intolerable I’ll go for the lap. You have my sympathies, it’s horrible.

Thanks for the replies. Yes sounds like it could possibly be cysts. I’ll go to my GP when I get a chance. I hope everyone else with this issue finds a solution too. It’s incredibly annoying to be on the time in your cycle when you’re supposed to have lots of energy and be feeling great, and be too sore to get off the couch.

I believe you ovulate about 2 weeks prior to your period. I have agonising pains and do believe it's some kind of cyst.

Your point re ovulation happening around two weeks prior to menses is incorrect. Ovulation can happen earlier, later or not at all in any given cycle.

The cause of this absolutely needs to be determined; no woman should have to put up with such pain. If such pain as well goes on for days then the advice of a gynae should be sought because that is not ovulation pain.
