Oral thrush as an adult

Hi, I had an operation nearly 4 weeks ago under general anaesthetic. I was intubated and then had a numb tip of my tongue for about a week. A few days later I noticed I had oral thrush. I was given a prescription for Nystan but after 7 days had seen no improvement so they gave me a big tube of Daktarin Gel. I’ve been using that since last Thursday (so 4 days) and still no improvement. I didn’t have breakfast this morning, just applied the gel and yet somehow it feels like it’s got worse even though I haven’t eaten and have only had the gel.
What else can I do? What is next if the gel doesn’t work?

Poor you, it is miserable isn't it? I have struggled with this a few times and have found it can be quite persistent. I always think the gel is a bit silly as it is quite hard to keep on your tongue!

Forgive me if you already know but have you got rid of your toothbrush? Not very good for the environment but I think one of the things that helped me get rid of it was getting a bag of cheap toothbrushes and using a new one every time I brushed, otherwise you risk spreading it about. If topical treatment isn't clearing it up you can be given an oral antifungal tablet.

Hope you can clear it up soon Flowers

Thanks.

No I’m still using the same one. I’ll order some, thank you.

It takes quite a while for the gel to work. When you apply it try to hold it in your mouth for a while before swallowing.

I found gargling with this mouthwash helped.

Have you tried eating natural yogurt? It feels horrible as it seems to cling to the thrush but it will help clear it.

Could you buy some pure aloe Vera juice and try swilling your mouth out with that a few times a day?

I had surgery 6 weeks ago and did get oral thrush. I was given oral antifungals which did work. I also used aloe Vera juice as a kind of mouthwash which helped with sore patches on the tongue.

I get this every now and then due to using a steroid inhaler. The only thing that clears it is a weeks worth of fluconazole tablets, try asking GP for them.

I suffer recurrent oral and oesophageal thrush due to autoimmune conditions and I am under an oral specialist for it. You need a course of Fluconazole to clear it - either the one off tablet 150mg every week for 2/3 weeks once a week or a daily dose of 50mg Fluconazole every day for 1/2 weeks. I take 150mg once a month as a preventative measure and use Daktarin gel every single night and Corsodyl mouth wash every morning. Corsodyl does stain your teeth but this can be removed by a hygienist.

Also - thrush really dries your mouth out so in between the meds try some synthetic saliva spray (GP can prescribe or you can buy some - Glandosane is good) and mouthwash from Biotene from Amazon helps.
