Coil removal - no threads?

Recently had my smear and the nurses mentioned that she couldn’t see my threads. I’m pretty sure it’s still there as I’ve had no periods, but it’s been in for 6 years so needs replacing.

What happens if they can’t find them? How do they get it out? And will there be pain relief?

When she removed my coil my GP said I'd be sent into the gynae ward if she couldn't get hold of the threads, and it would be removed there. Luckily she managed to find them and removal was totally painless.

I'm sure you'd be given pain relief if there was difficulty removing it. I hope so, anyway.

Thanks for the reassurance. Hate these types of things anyway (who doesn’t) but the thought of someone having to rummage around is awful!

I had to have a scan as they struggled to find mine recently all fine and apparently they have a 'special tool' so I should be fine Confused

I had to have mine out under general anesthesia at hospital as the threads had gone awol, they put the next one in at the same time. Luckily I was referred under NHS to a local private hospital, it was like having a day in a hotel, nice lunch after the procedure and no rush to discharge so the afternoon was spent napping in a private room.

I'm waiting for a scan to find mine, as when I went to have it changed the strings were nowhere to be seen! She tried using a "string retrieval tool which looked a bit like a skinny bottle brush, but no luck. It did hurt a bit, but I'm known to be a bit of a wuss ;)

I had to have mine removed under GA

My gynaecologist couldn’t find my threads. Little local anaesthetic in the cervix. The she went inside and found them easily.

My threads disappeared too. My GP managed to hook them out somehow (no idea how - prefer not to know!). It didn't hurt at all. She did say if she couldn't do it I would have to referred to the Gynaecology unit. But all was fine

Mine was also removed under GA after the gynae department couldn't remove it

I had mine out 4 years ago, only because it wasn't situated right, I had another put in straight after but it wasn't painful having it out. I can't find the strings on mine, only know it's in the right place/still in from a couple of ct scans, I can not feel it at all.

I was referred to the sexual health clinic and they gave me a local and used an ultrasound to locate and help guide removal. The nurse was lovely and held my hand whilst they whipped it out and put in another one.
