Tranexamic Acid

Hi all, appreciate that I need to go back to gynae, but know it won't be instant to get an appointment so wanted to ask for any experiences here please!

I had my mirena removed in November (originally in to control periods) and within a week, all side affects disappeared (acne, excessive sweating, facial hair, depression, constant crying and most importantly really terrifying intrusive thoughts).

I had no period until end of March and since then only 3 days period free! I went back to gynae who prescribed tranexamic acid, continue period diary and come back in 6 months.

Monday was first day I had a break in period so when it started again, I took the pills as instructed for 4 days (horrific side affects but it did lighten it a bit) but now stopped the pills as it said only 4 days and now even heavier flow than before... which just feels completely pointless! As I'm still on my period, I don't know when I can start taking them again (will rimg pharmacist tomorrow!) But I just wanted to see what others had experienced please?

Not to drip feed, my periods for the last 3 months have made me anxious to leave the house for anything more than 30 mins at a time and I am very sensitive to being fobbed off - I was at the gp monthly for the last 5 years trying to have my (now known to be) mirena symptoms taken seriously and now I just feel like these are the new "run along now" if that makes sense?

Thank you for reading, I know it's a long one!

Hi oodleloodle,
Sorry to hear you are feeling like this. I dont have alot of experience with tranexamic tablets as I was only started on them 2 months ago. I'm 44, perimenopausal and within the past year diagnosed with adenomyosis and fibroids . My periods have become increasingly heavy over the past few years after stopping the pill and having copper coil removed. Gynae said that this has caused my periods to become heavy . Like you, I dare not leave the house for the first day as it's so heavy! I was told to take the tablets for the first 4 days. Thankfully it helped lighten my periods, and I decided only to take the tablets for the first 2 days and this has worked for me. I dont particularly like taking tablets and dont feel great on them (I know they lighten periods, but it almost feels like my body need a good 'clear out' when I'm on them Grin.' So I will continue to take them for the 6 months they have suggested to see how they help, and hopefully back to gynae again. They are trying to get my to have the mirena coil, but I had so much bother with the copper coil I had it removed after 6 months! I hope you get some better advice and you feel better soon x

Hi, sorry to hear you have been so unwell, a constant period must be so horrible to cope with.
I have been prescribed tranexamic acid for a couple of years. I have a problem with blood clotting and I was told to take for a maximum of seven days. TA really helps me as before I would not have been able to leave the house. Obviously, my issues are from a different cause to you and you must follow what you have been advised by your doctor. I have no medical knowledge but I am replying to relate that i have had a positive experience of TA and it is a game changer for me.

If I were in your shoes, I would get back in touch with the Consultant and explain how things are for you as six months is far too long to wait. They might be able to alter dose or give you something else.

Good luck! I really hope that things will be much better for you soon.

Thank you both for replying! I'm contacted the gynae and waiting to hear back, just so frustrating!
I'm terrified of wfh ending because I cannot go back to the office like this!
In the mirena's defence it did stop my periods completely, but at 33 I feel like there has to be a better 3rd option than implant and feeling suicidal or no implant and unable to leave the house!
