Can I have a rant about fibroids?!

Anyone else here with fibroid(s)? Diagnosed with a huge one (15x11x11cm) last year, the wheels of the NHS are turning so slowly and it just feels as if there's no end in sight. Apparently they are still only doing emergency surgery and predict that the 'beast' might not be removed before next year. Have been TTC for seven years and suspect this is the cause - uterus is the size of a 6mth pregnancy, kidneys and bladder impacted. Apparently fibroid too big to be safe to TTC, and no TTC for a year after myomectomy - if anyone can shed any rays of hope, I'll send you Flowers

Sorry what’s TTC?

PhilnKirstiefindmeahouse · 05/06/2021 07:59

Any chance you can afford to go private?

Robin233 · 05/06/2021 08:07

Trying to conceive

Robin233 · 05/06/2021 08:10

I knew someone who 'healed herself' large fibroid- went on to have 2 children- boy and a girl.
I'll try and find out more if you are interested?

iminthegarden · 05/06/2021 08:19

Keep pushing, try to ask for second opinions, basically be a nuisance, are you in pain? The more awful you make it sound living with it might help them rush you through. The nhs is using private facilities for surgery backlog in some areas, hopefully you'll get there soon. I

Where is the fibroid? I had a large fibroid discovered at my 11w scan with dc 1, when it was substantially larger than my pregnant uterus. The fibroid was on the outside of my uterus, with a thin enough attachment that it moved around. It did not cause any pain until a couple of months later, by which time it had grown to the size of yours. Then it was excruciating, and continued causing pain throughout my pregnancy.

Because of the fibroid, I was on consultant care for all my pregnancies. But AFAIK it never caused me problems conceiving, nor with labour (all were midwife-supported). I had to have extra scans each time to check it wasn't obstructing the baby's exit, in which case I would have had to have elective CS, but it never did. After each pregnancy it shrank back again and only caused minor discomfort between pregnacies.

Sadly can't afford to go private @PhilnKirstiefindmeahouse, and rural living means nearest private hospital is four hours drive away.

@Robin233 - I would love to find out more if you didn't mind!

Thanks @iminthegarden - I have another appt at my local hospital next week so plan to ham it up a bit. I'm not in huge pain but feel so huge and heavy, really anemic and generally feel awful so although it's not anything life threatening, just generally feel ill a lot of the time.

@Dilbertian - was desperately hoping that the MRI would show that it was peduncluated like yours but safely it's intramural which means it can be removed but is so large they couldn't see my ovaries or endometrium on the last ultrasound and is apparently blocking the 'junction', although I'm not sure what that means but think it means that it makes implantation difficult? Sorry you had to deal with so much pain in your pregnancies!

Oh that really is rant-worthy. What a pain.

passenger19 · 05/06/2021 21:30

I had a similar size fibroid to you..Jan 2020 had a scan and in june got the call.,They did a uterine fibroid embolisation. ,I was surprised given the pandemic..so I hope they see you quickly too

longtompot · 05/06/2021 21:44

My 5+cm which is protruding into my womb is causing me enough issues and I am not ttc. I feel for you op with what you are going through. I'd suggest keep calling and try to find out when you can be seen.
I too would love to know how someone has healed themselves from one!

BergamotandLime · 05/06/2021 22:44

Interesting @passenger19 - has it worked for you? Do you know if you can have a UFE if you want to preserve fertility?

OP posts:
passenger19 · 06/06/2021 07:55

@BergamotandLime. yes it has worked as a surgical procedure it's the least invasive option. ..so my guess would be yes it would preserve fertility. ,However I am in my 50's. so it wasn't a question I ever asked! btw I would be very skeptical about people's claims to "cure" themselves from fibroids.

@Robin233 - I would love to find out more if you didn't mind!

Her name was Gillian.
I attended several of her classes and enjoyed them immensely.
But it had all started for her when she had a large fibroid.
I'm pretty sure she actually had book out about her journey.
I'll find out more for you today.

I had a large one and a couple of smaller ones but nothing like as big as yours and I had uterine artery embolisation (thankfully covered by work's private medical cover or I'd probably still be waiting now) and whilst it has been successful in that it's stopped them growing apparently my uterus has only shrunk by 10-20% and is still considered to be 10-12 weeks pregnant size.
This website is good for explaining treatment options www.britishfibroidtrust.org.uk/
