Hormone-related incontinence

Hello all. I have recently been experiencing some urinary incontinence. I’m 36 and, after quite a lot of investigations, my doctor and I have agreed that it is largely related to hormones. It is quite severe from 3/4 days before my period and improves gradually for the same amount of time afterwards. Apparently this is a known issue but there’s not much research and so, in terms of treatment, people are a bit stumped. I’ve been offered the pill but I’d like to explore other options before committing to that.

Has anyone experienced this and do you have any advice or experience of other treatments?

Also, I know that kegels are really important but everyone I speak to tells me to do them. I do them, I’m very active in exercises which are traditionally linked to a good pelvic floor and several medical professionals have agreed that the strength is not the issue. I’m a tiny bit over-sensitive to people telling me they’re the answer. They aren’t the full answer here and the last person who announced it as if I’ve never heard of them made me cry! (Total over reaction on my part!)

Sorry I have no advice but I’m currently on my period (I’m 39) and I’m pretty sure I unknowingly pissed myself. My pad was wet and I thought wtf 😳 sorry I can’t help you but I definitely need to do my pelvic floors more. Got very lax in recent years. I haven’t had this happen since just after I gave birth to my daughter over 7 years ago.

I have the same issue and it’s definitely related to my hormone pattern and cycle. I have Gynae issues so certain times in the month when my tummy (uterus) is swollen I can need to pee every half hour. It’s like being heavily pregnant.

Hi OP, if you don’t mind me asking, is it urge or stress incontinence you’re experiencing? I would highly recommend seeing a women’s health physio as there is so much they can do to help. You’re also right that kegels aren’t always the answer, and can sometimes make the problem worse, if for example your pelvic floor is too tight! Honestly get booked in with a physio - they can work wonders.

I don’t mind you asking at all - I did post about it on the internet Grin It’s stress. I am currently seeing a womens physio who has been amazing in narrowing down the issue but is also a bit stumped on how to manage it from hereon in. I totally agree they’re amazing though!

I have a soft plastic device (on prescription) which I wear inside my vagina when I'm running to help so you could get that and just wear it for those few days?

It's called Contiform.

My physio explained that just before your period your womb is bigger and heavier so pushes on the bladder / pelvic floor more. Made perfect sense to me!

Hi, just seen this. I'm totally the same. Have you had any solutions yet?
