"Lost" Mirena

I went to have my Mirena replaced today at long last or so I thought - the nurse couldn't find the strings! After lots of poking about up there, she gave up and is referring me for an ultrasound.
Does anyone have a similar experience of this?

Yes - twice! They found it on the ultrasound, but was embedded high up so needed anaesthetic to remove (uncomfortable but not overly painful). Gave up on coils after the second time.

Have you ever had very heavy bleeding? I had a particularly bad episode and it's assumed that my mirena fell out during that as I checked the strings a few days afterwards and couldn't feel them. They thought they could see it on an MRI but it wasn't to be found during a hysteroscopy and an xray confirmed it wasn't anywhere else outside my womb! Do you not check the strings?

No, no heavy bleeding. I've been having very light and irregular bleeding for the last year because I'm well overdue getting it changed. I was never told to check for the strings (which I understand now I should have been) but I asked the nurse who did my smear a couple of years ago to check and she could see them then.

Yeah, they couldn't find mine. Ultrasound found it and had a general anaesthetic to get it removed.

I had something very similar. Had the ultra sound which showed the coil had slipped quite low down but by the time I got N appointment to have it replaced it had disappeared! Cue a little panic from me as I'm lying there with legs in stirrups. The nurse used the hysterascope (sp?) and found it wedged into the lining near the top of my uterus. It was a bit painful to get it out but fairly quick and I felt fine the next day.
I had one put in at the same time so fingers crossed it doesn't shift about.
The first one I had was no trouble at all!

Happened to me with my first one. The strings weren’t there when I went back for my routine check 6 weeks after insertion.

I had an ultrasound scan that showed the coil was in place but the strings had been drawn up into my womb.

It didn’t affect the efficacy of the coil, but it was obviously a huge problem when it came to me wanting the coil removed 3 years later. It was not a pleasant experience.

I never check the strings Blush

dementedpixie · 26/05/2021 16:36

Mine was still in place so it was left until it expired. Had to get it removed under general anaesthetic

Roselilly36 · 26/05/2021 16:38

I have never checked the strings either, on my 4th coil!

paniniswapx3 · 26/05/2021 16:41

Thank goodness it's not just me @Roselilly36! I'm on my 2nd & will need it replaced in September so I'm assuming it's still there (& working!)
