Cervical ectropion

Hello ladies.

Was anyone else nervous and scared about their treatment for cervical ectropion? Also after the treatment were all your smears normal?

I don't think an abnormal smear has anything to do with an ectropion. Did you have an abnormal smear and are being treated for that? Or do you have an ectropion?

Laura6521 · 19/05/2021 00:47

I have cervical ectropion. I just wanted to find someone with cervical ectropion that had normal smears afterwards. Do you have cervical ectropion?

I've had a cervical ectropion a few years ago and was treated for it. I never had abnormal smears so I don't understand why you are asking. The 2 don't go together. If someone has treatment for abnormal cells noticed with a smear then that is due to pre-cancerous cell changes. If you have an ectropion then that only means that cells from the inside of the cervix are growing on the outside area of the cervix. This wouldn't impact on a smear test.

If you are wondering if an ectropion goes away after treatment, they come back a lot of the time.

I have cervical ectropian that was picked up at my smear test. It wasn't made a fuss of the nurse just said that I had it and it was most probably due to the pill.

I went home and googled and it isn't linked to cervical cancer or abnormal cells, it's just as pp says, cells from the inside growing on the outside.
My cells were normal on the results of that cervical screening but I did have HPV so am going back in a year to have another.

I think googling anything will bring up some results to what you've asked so if you put "cervical ectropian and cervical cancer" for example then you will find things that say its linked. I would get health information from the NHS and if you're still concerned then speak to your gp.

I saw my GP today as I’ve been experiencing some light bleeding after sex (as in pink streaks on the toilet paper) and when she examined me she said that my cervix was red and most likely an ectropian. I had never even heard of the term until today.

She said she didn’t think it looked concerning but I’ve been referred to a local hospital as an emergency (she said something about a cancer pathway) because although 90% of the time it is an ectropian, they still have to refer women for further testing just in case it is something more serious.

She didn’t seem worried at all.....but I am Sad

Earlybirdmissedtheworm · 19/05/2021 22:10

@ThornAmongstRoses try not to panic, chances are it is ectropian.
Your GP could have had more tact, surely they would know that mentioning emergency referral and cancer in the same sentence would make you worry.
It's good they're checking it out but it's highly unlikely to be anything sinister.
Good luck

@Earlybirdmissedtheworm were you referred after the nurse noticed it at your smear test ? Or did she just tell you what it was and that was that ?
I just took Doctors word for it at the time when she discovered mine . I wasn't referred. Didn't think anything of it but now concerning me that I wasn't referred as I can see some ppl are ! Had not even given it a second thought until now . And mine was noticed about 7/8 years ago . Had all clear smears .

I had an ectropion treated in 2019, just had mysmear and it came back normal

rubyslippers · 31/05/2021 16:35

I’m being treated for this at the mo
Just had a cauterisation a month ago
It is not linked to anything sinister and I have no cause for concern - my consultant was very reassuring
It’s fairly common apparently

summerdays37 · 31/05/2021 16:43

Hey ,

Yeah I wasn't worried at all , have not been for the past 7 years or so . As I trusted what my Doctor told me .
The thing that has sparked off my worry is the fact that some people have seen a gynaecologist about it . So they can be sure that it IS ectropian. I never saw a specialist. Just a nurse noticed it at a smear . And then I saw a Gp who that is what it is . I was not referred to the gynae unit for a diagnosis.
NEVER had any symptoms xx

I had an ectropian cervix about 9 years ago, I was referred for colposcopy after a smear as I had a lot of contact bleeding. It was treated, but I'm having bleeding after sex again now so I suspect it's back. I'm not worried though. I've been referred to gynecology for my lost Mirena to be removed, I'll ask for it to be looked at then. I've had two smears since it was first discovered and they were both normal.

summerdays37 · 31/05/2021 16:48

Maybe I wasn't referred as I didn't have any symptoms . Honestly wish I never read a post about it now ! Have not given it a second thought in all these years , now I'm thinking I've got something festering away ! But with 3 clear smears . That's reassuring .

Cannothandletheheat · 31/05/2021 18:55

In my experience ectropians are only treated if they’re causing symptoms. I’ve had 2 (2 different places on my cervix six years apart). The first was causing cramping and bleeding after sex, this was frozen off. My second was also causing random bleeding but this one was treated with silver nitrate. Both times it has solved the problem bleeding. I have never had an abnormal smear result, with or without an ectropian.
