Mirena coil fitting - how was it ?

I’m waiting to have a coil fitted. I asked for one due to having two days of heavy bleeding in a period, and having had very low ferritin recently.
A couple of workmates have them and have said that they stopped their periods.
So two questions. I’m peri menopause and have no intention at this time of taking HRT, is there any problem with having just progesterone from the coil ?
And what is it really like having the coil fitted ? I’m scared !

Oh, and how bad is it having it removed ?

Having it removed is a breeze.

I think insertion depends on whether you've had labours/ vaginal births. I had one attempted pre kids -was horrendous. Post kids was relatively easy. Not quite a case of "throwing it up there", not my favourite thing but ok

EversoDelighted · 14/05/2021 08:57

I found insertion similar to a smear test (having had two babies vaginally). Having it removed was a bit unpleasant but not that bad.

emmathedilemma · 14/05/2021 09:01

I haven’t had kids and it was pretty sore, didn’t help that the first speculum was broken and wouldn’t stay open then she was problem reaching my cervix. It was pretty nippy, worse than a smear! Mine bled itself out and I didn’t even notice!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 14/05/2021 09:04

I had mine inserted under GA due to a phobia of having things pushed into my cervix. Good job really, as I have a backwards-tilting womb and it took them 25 minutes to insert.

I had it removed 4 months later, as the coil made me utterly miserable. Removal took seconds and was completely painless.

I had one fitted to sort out heavy and irregular bleeding. Worked like a miracle and, to be honest, was life changing for me. Although I was apprehensive about having it put in it was no worse than having a smear, and the same for removal. I had 2, last one removed and no more periods since due to menopause. Mine was purely for period problems not contraception. (Have had 3 babies, normal births)

KikiniBamalam · 14/05/2021 09:09

Life changing for me too. Take a paracetamol beforehand, it will be quick, it’s a bit painful, just breath through it and it’s done. I take it as the progesterone part of my HRT. No problems at all. I’m on my third mirena, I’ve had them for around 14 years.

lizzie0712 · 14/05/2021 09:11

I had mine fitted 7 months ago to help with heavy painful periods, fitting was virtually painless. It has helped with the pain however I've been bleeding continuously since. I have a GP appt next week to discuss removal. Disappointing it doesn't work for me.

Laufeythejust · 14/05/2021 09:17

I tried it but it didn’t agree with me (constant spotting for about 2 months and sex drive vanished completely) and then I still had periods but they weren’t as heavy.
I haven’t had children but found getting it put in alright. I read some right horror stories online so was expecting torture. They measure your cervix and that’s the bit that was uncomfortable- it was a short sharp pain that weirdly I felt in my chest but then that was it. Felt strange then inserting the actual coil as you can feel it open, but it wasn’t painful.
Having it removed didn’t hurt at all. I got sick of all the side effects and removed it myself (wouldn’t advise) but no pain and everything went back to normal pretty much straightaway.

I had mine inserted at the age of almost 57 to provide the progesterone element of my HRT (I'm on oestrogen gel).

Because of my age, perhaps, it was slightly awkward and a speculum broke. So it took longer than it should have done to get through the cervix. The nurse said that the cervix was spasming but this was probably because I'd had so many other gynie procedures in the previous months (two hysteroscopies), so not typical of most insertions. I took cocodomal before and was fine to drive myself home immediately afterwards. A little bit crampy for 24 hours, but no more than period-pain intensity.

But I managed and the mirena has been excellent. It seems to have stopped my bleeding and hopefully has calmed down my endometrium, meaning I won't need a hysterectomy.

I have had few side-effects. I can put on a pound/pound a half more easily if I eat too much carbohydrate-y stuff, and it is slightly harder to get rid of, but no more than that. No headaches, acne, bad mood, etc.

And it works well with the oestrogen. I'm really glad I have a Mirena.

Thanks all. I’ve had kids so hopefully it will be ok.

I've had 2 kids but both by section, am now on my second mirena and it has been fine both times - a bit uncomfortable with the rummaging round but no worse than a smear in my experience (I did take a paracetamol in advance both times!). Periods stopped within a month the first time and never came back when the second one was inserted so it's been over 6 years since having a period Grin I do get some spots along my jawline once a month which I assume are hormonal, the GP recommended la roche posay effaclar skincare which has really helped get them under control.

Moonface123 · 15/05/2021 15:54

I am on my third mirena, no period for 15 years, no side effects, it has suited me really well.
I will admit l found the insertion abit uncomfortable, and suffered stomach cramps for couple of days, but nothing that l couldn't manage.

hopeishere · 15/05/2021 21:52

They had to stop my insertion as it was so horrendously painful.

DiamondBright · 15/05/2021 22:03

My GP nearly stopped my insertion as it was so painful and there was a lot of blood but I asked her to continue because my periods were horrendous. I had cramps for a few days and bleeding for a week or so, since then it's been brilliant. No regrets.

1st coil:

Insertion was fine. It was uncomfortable but the doctor was amazing - she was explaining things to me, chatting away to me to keep me calm etc and it was fine. Maybe took about 20 minutes from start to finish. The removal of the coil was horrendous however (4 years after having it) due to the strings having been drawn up into my womb so there was nothing there to be able to pull the device out. I ultimately ended up in a gynaecological clinic to have it removed and it was so traumatic.

2nd Coil:

Insertion was horrendously painful. It felt like the GP just shoved it up and the pain was excruciatingly, I was actually in tears. That time it probably took less than 2 minutes to insert it, so very, very different to my first experience. Thankfully though, when I had that one removed it was out in a few pain-free seconds.
