Mirena coil

Hi, I have an appointment to have the coil fitted end of this week. Just wondering what to expect immediately after and the following few days. I am due a period imminently and am really hoping it will hold off until I have my appointment. I have read that you can have the coil fitted whilst on your period, does anyone have any experience of this? Will I be able to use tampons immediately after or will it have to be pads? It sounds a bit grim, but I really just want to get it done and having to reschedule the appointment will be a pain.
Thanks

I had both mine fitted whilst on period - because they were fitted as I had a daily period for months!

Expect a very sharp pain for up to 10 seconds when it's put in.

Few days of light cramping and discomfort but moving around, ibuprofen and heat bag help.

Expect up to 4 months of spotting on and off.

I do believe you cannot use tampons for first 48 hours but don't quote me on that one!

Thanks. Did it slow the bleeding immediately?
Will I be ok to take my tranexamic acid if not?
I will, of course, discuss all this with the GP at my appointment but its nice to have a bit of a heads up.

Didn't slow mine at all!

Still continued to flood every month and both came out after 3 months 🤦🏼‍♀️

But I have bulky uterus with patches on an ultrasound and this indicates adenomyosis- so now I'm referred to gynae and will need ablation or hysterectomy

I had surgery 3 weeks for removal of fibroids. Surgeon fitted the Mirena to stop uterus walls from collapsing. I took medication to stop my period as I was due around surgery date. Period arrived after 3 days and so coil didn’t work straight away. I’m currently cramping quite badly and spotting. Will be interesting to see if a full-one period will happen. PMS is really bad also.

I had one fitted for the first time 2 days ago. I wasn't on period but did bleed after. Took paracetamol and ibuprofen as recommended, it didn't hurt but it felt uncomfortable. Not sure about tampons but was told not to have sex for a week.

Soontobe60 · 03/05/2021 17:45

Take some paracetamol an hour before. It might be a bit crappy for a few hours. I’d use a pad. My mirena took about 3 months to reduce the bleeding, which had been horrendous, then eventually bleeding stopped completely after 6 months

Thanks all. I feel ridiculously anxious about the whole thing Confused. I'm not usually phased by medical procedures. My periods haven't been too much bother up until the last few months. Last couple have been very heavy, and I just don't want to put up with that nonsense! I'm 48 so probably just an age thing.

Definitely advised not to use tampons straight away but I can’t remember how long to abstain for - it might have been the first month. Take painkillers before your appointment!
It didn’t suit me at all but a lot of people love it.

Well its in! Was a bit uncomfortable, but straightforward for which I am grateful! Light bleeding currently, any ideas how long that may last?

I had my first mirena 23yrs ago.. Bit of trouble getting it in a few times but period free for 20 years.. Post menopause now but I was lucky with mine..

Moonface123 · 06/05/2021 22:27

I am on my third mirena, and apart from a bit of discomfort after the fittng, it suits me fine. Zero periods, or PMT. No side effects.
I hope it works as well for you.

Bugsy73 · 09/05/2021 14:23

More questions...... so fitted with no problems, have had a little bit of light bleeding and spotting, no discomfort at all; this morning I think I have started my period as bleeding is heavier. Anyone any idea if this will just be a 'normal' period?

Apologies for popping up again.... coil has now been in for two weeks and I'm still bleeding. Not sure if its a period or just a consequence of insertion. Its not particularly heavy but getting a bit tiresome. Has anyone experienced similar, and is it likely to stop any time soon?

I've had a mirena in situ for 16 months, I had quite a bit of spotting for the first few month. I still bleed regularly every month but its now more like a couple of days of light spotting instead of the very heavy flooding I was getting prior to having the mirena fitted. I'm 51. I have had it checked and was told by my GP that not all women experience no periods at all after fitting, we all react differently. I hope it settles down quickly for you.

CustardyCreams · 19/05/2021 20:19

Hi, I had light bleeding for several months, then settled into an extremely light regular monthly period , lasts for a day or two, minimal pms. I had previously had very heavy flooding periods, so this is a massive improvement. Hope it works out for you too.

Bugsy73 · 19/05/2021 20:38

Thank you, this is reassuring! To be honest, its fairly light and even though currently constant, I think I'd still take this over the flooding I was getting.... will hang in there.

I’m on week six of light bleeding although past two days feel it is more normal period like and have boob pain. Mirena fitted six weeks ago, period had started 2 days before fitting. Am presuming it’s not situated properly hence light bleeding everyday. Have nurse tomorrow to check it 🤷‍♀️

Bugsy73 · 21/05/2021 18:56

How did you get on with the nurse marmitegirl?
