Breast pain

Hello,

I’m 46 and often have tender breasts before my period, usually both but sometimes just one side. Occasionally I get pain at other times of the month too (non cyclical). About 7 years ago, I had an us scan at the breast clinic after finding a small lump and was told that I have dense fibrocystic tissue on the right side.

So, I’m currently in CD4, had the usual tenderness in the run up to AF, but then noticed that my right breast was (and is) still tender even once my period had started.

Second odd thing is that I had a couple of days of normal, heavyish bleeding which then basically stopped yesterday morning and not had anything since. Went to the loo just now and I seem to have ewcm so it seems my period has ended very early.

Does anyone r we lose have experience of breast pain lasting once their period has started? I’m assuming this is all hormone related given that my period is weird too!

Should say “does anyone else have experience...)!

If you are worried, you ought to see your GP. It's not really relevant what anyone else had as this is about YOU! Even if someone posted to say they had pain outside of the PMS stage of the month, it doesn't answer your questions.

Please get an appt with your GP and they can assess what to do next.

@JinglingHellsBells thanks, yes I will see my GP but I’ll see what happens first. As I said, I know that I have fibrocystic tissue in my right breast, so I’m assuming it’s reacting to my hormone levels in some way differently this month.

Wait for what?

newnamenellie · 11/04/2021 17:41

A few days to see if it settles down, I’ve no reason to think it’s anything sinister, I was more curious as to why it’s different this month.

Ah, okay. Might be hormonal.

Hello

Same age sort of same issue. I let it settle for a few weeks and it didn't go so went to GP who had a good rummage and couldn't feel anything at all. She's referred me to the breast clinic just in case though as this is my 'dodgy boob' too.

I do suspect peri hormones tbh as it feels like period boobs but would rather it was checked.

Tbf last time I had sore boobs outside of normal cycle I was pregnant but I am 100% sure that's not my issue this time.......

newnamenellie · 13/04/2021 10:20

Yes I suspect perimenopause too 😬. I’m going to see what happens with my next cycle and follow it up if it’s still sore. Glad yours was okay. I think the trouble with this sort of thing is that once you’re aware of it, you become hyper sensitive so it’s hard to know if it’s real or imagined!!

Seriously - please see your GP quickly as there are some forms of breast cancer that appear this way. I noticed similar and was referred to breast clinic urgently and within a matter of days was diagnosed with breast cancer. I'm now having treatment, it's grim - but the fact it was detected very early has made a huge difference to my prognosis.

I really don't mean to worry you unduly, but please talk to your GP ASAP. Days counted in my case, so please don't wait to see if it 'settles.' I do hope it turns out to be nothing, but honestly it's best to let your GP decide on next steps.

@Starhaf I am a bit worried now :( but you are right of course.

My referral to the breast clinic hasn't come through yet so will call tomorrow (it's been almost 2 weeks since my gp appointment). My breast pain has definitely reduced a lot since I saw the gp but it still feels a bit 'off' so better chase up the check.

newnamenellie · 19/04/2021 14:11

@Starhaf oh goodness, that’s worrying. How are you doing? Do you mind me asking how yours felt and if you had any other symptoms. I have made a gp appointment but unfortunately it’s not until Thursday (so three days away).

@newnamenellie. Really sorry I've only just seen your response tonight. I'm due to have my 6th (&hopefully final!) round of chemo next week , which will be followed by a mastectomy and radiotherapy. Then targeted therapy every 3 weeks for one year afterwards. Reconstruction is an option then after a year post mastectomy.

My story is that in the approach to a period my breasts would swell slightly and become tender. In February this year the swelling happened as normal for me, however one breast remained swollen. I didn't think anything of it for a day or two. The skin became inflamed and I could see enlarged pores, which became the start of an 'orange peel' texture.

I was very lucky, my GP saw me that day & referred me urgently to hospital breast clinic. I was seen in breast clinic within less than a week where i had ultrasounds, mammogram and some biopsies taken. I knew by the time I left clinic that day that I had cancer. 4 days later I returned to clinic to receive the formal diagnosis and to be told it was best that I started chemo almost immediately, followed by mastectomy.

So I'm now 5 rounds of chemo down, with just one more round to go & a mastectomy booked for late July. Only when the surgery is complete will they be able to accurately stage my cancer. So far the news has been as good as it can be - the chemo has reduced the size of my tumour considerably and despite the cancer being aggressive, there is no evidence of spread beyond the lymph nodes. So I'm hopeful !

In response to your question about other symptoms, the only thing I can think of was that for a couple of months before diagnosis I was extremely tired. As I was just concluding a difficult divorce, moving home, starting a new job and peri menopausal, I didn't think too much of it & just put this down to everything that was going on in my life at that time.

I hope all has gone well for you
