Pelvic floor damaged?

Hi there

I had my second baby 8 months ago. Natural delivery, no tears (thankfully - I had a bad tear with my first and it took ages to heal). He was a fairly big baby - just over 8lb - but nothing too huge. However since having him I’ve had a horrible feeling down below when I lift and carry something heavy. It’s like a sharp, sometimes rubbing, pain. It’s got worse as he is getting bigger (he’s now a hefty 22lbs) and I still carry him in a front facing sling. On a fairly strenuous uphill walk yesterday with him in the sling, I had to stop because the pain started getting so bad. Does this sound like a pelvic floor issue? A prolapse? Or just that I’m not what I used to be after 2 babies?!

I had a smear test about 6 months ago and the nurse said everything looked normal down there! (I asked as I was 2 months postpartum and things still didn’t feel right). I’ve done pelvic floor exercises throughout both pregnancies and postnatal periods and this never happened with my first.

Do you think this is just a normal postnatal recovery issue or should I see a doctor? Anyone with any advice or had something similar?

I wouldn't say it sounds normal. Can you book to go and see a pelvic health physio and get it checked out?

I wasn’t aware that there were such things as pelvic floor therapists so thanks for mentioning them. Can you get referred through the doctor or are they mostly private? I’ll have a look into it

See an obstetric physio- ask your GP

Yes you can get referred as far as I know. They are called Women's Health physios. I actually went private as I was worried about my pelvic floor after birth but I'm sure you can get seen on the NHS.

Here's an example of what they do: www.traceymilesphysio.com/conditions-treated/womens-health
