Mirena coil - agony and bleeding after procedure

Hi, I’ve just had my first Mirena coil. It was an incredibly painful procedure, bloody too. I had local anaesthetic before it was inserted but that did nothing. I don’t know what happened but when they were doing it I was in agony and simultaneously wanted to throw up and poo with the shock off it. Thankfully I did not.

I was given a very large maternity pad and told it should settle down in 2 days. I had to wait for 30 mins before they would let me drive myself home.

I’ve been told no bathing, sex (no fucking chance), or tampons for 5 days.

I asked if this is normal and they said yes for some women. It would have been nice to have known this in the literature about the Mirena coil before I went for it. For instance I would have made DH take me.

The leaflet states, “ pain, bleeding or dizziness during and after placement. If these symptoms do not stop after 30 minutes Mirena may not have been placed correctly. Your HCP will examine you to see if Mirena needs to be removed or replaced.”

Well no one examined me before I left. I’m laid in bed with ibuprofen, and working out how to homeschool and cook lunch when I just want to hide away.

Please can anyone tell me if they’ve experienced the same? I’m hoping they’ve not fucked it up and I’ve got to have the bastard thing out again in a few weeks time.

might be worth a call to the surgery to ask if it sounds normal. I remember some pain and cramps for a few days, but not to the extent you describe.

Fucket · 01/03/2021 10:14

Thanks fabulousspider it wasn’t done at the surgery but gynaecologist. I have her secretary number but she said to wait 48 hours to ring if bleeding doesn’t stop.

I’m guessing this isn’t as normal as they made it out to be.

It does sound as though from what the leaflet states you might have to have a refit, but not sure!

That's strange as the information I had before I had mine fitted said that you might want someone to drive you there and back as it's common to feel dizzy and sick.

My first one I felt horrendous for the rest of the day, retching and terrible cramps and bleeding. The two following that were a bit better.

Fucket · 01/03/2021 10:25

Ok thanks graffitiqueen. I will wait it out, hopefully I won’t need to call them back and all will be fine.

I would call them tomorrow if there is no further improvement after today. Not all women are suitable candidates for the Mirena and in some cases it can cause more problems,

May I ask why it was suggested, was it because of long term heavy and or painful periods?. (I refused one because of this reason and because its only addressing the symptoms rather than the cause).

Fucket · 01/03/2021 10:58

Yes it’s for heavy periods.

Sounds like when I had mine. My cervix went into spasm and I begged her to stop! But she didn’t. I fainted with the pain and mine was bloody too. I was told it would be a quick procedure and only slightly uncomfortable at most. So no pain relief.

I’d had it done in my lunch hour as was assured what an easy procedure it would be.

I’m sorry to say (and it does not mean it will be the case for you) mine never settled and was not properly in the right place. As a result I could feel it dragging my uterus like barbed wire sporadically. I went back and asked them to remove it and they said I had to wait for it to settle.

Upshot was six months later I paid privately to have it removed as wasn’t getting anywhere with my GP. I never felt that horrible pain again.

I know many women get on well with them but that was not my experience.

MedusasBadHairDay · 01/03/2021 11:03

I found the mirena so painful I had it removed the next day, I didn't have the same problems with the copper coil though.

Flamingolingo · 01/03/2021 11:04

Mine has been in 4.5 hours now but I found the first 24 hours painful. Like others, I think the insertion caused some spasming for me. I remember lying in bed feeling really sorry for myself. I think I had spotting for several days/a couple of weeks after, and then nothing since.

cantkeepgoing · 01/03/2021 11:05

I had mine removed 3 days later in a+e.....found out then that it wasn't fitted in the right place. It was really sore.....labour was a breeze in comparison to this x

I had quite a lot of bleeding when they first did it, the floor of the GP surgery had blood drips all over it! They had problems with the speculums though and I think she'd been pinching my cervix to pull it into the right place. It was very fresh, bright red watery blood, not at all like period blood. I went home feeling like I'd been abused!
I had quite bad cramps after it was fitted and took the rest of the day off work but it eased off after a couple of days. I had lots of spotting and intermittent bleeding with it thought and it never really settled down before i bled itself out a year later!

gettingalife · 01/03/2021 17:53

I had one fitted at the beginning of February and I've only just been able to do my jeans up!

It's taken 4 weeks to fully settle snd was very painful and uncomfortable for 2 weeks.

Please stick with it though as I've had 2 before and they're great for heavy periods. The bleeding carries on for a fair few weeks but after a few months it stops and you're period free for four and a half years!

emmathedilemma · 01/03/2021 17:58

For some people that’s the case @gettingalife and that’s what the medical professionals will tell you but for a lot of people it does not reduce or eliminate bleeding!

minniemoocher · 01/03/2021 18:00

Seems very wrong to be honest, I had no pain or bleeding, certainly no dizziness and was driving 10 mins later. I was told no tampons for a month btw.

AllTheWayFromLondonDAMN · 01/03/2021 18:02

Doesn’t sound quite right to me. I had one put in before I had kids and had the reaction you state. Lasted about 12hrs and was then okay. Pain was horrifying though, like middle of Labour pain (I now know!) However the ones I’ve had in since having kids have been absolutely fine. I would always go as far as to say I could hardly feel them.
